  • Fuel Cock and Choke

Two quick questions.....1) My MSF instructors AND the Yamaha Manual both say to turn the Fuel Cock to the OFF position each and every time the MC is not on. Everyone else, including the bike shop mechanic, says to leave it in the ON position and don't put it in the OFF position, unless i'm going to not use it for a long time, or if i'm storing it. What y'all think? 2). When starting cold engine, I pull the choke out and after about 20 seconds, push it back in. Am I supposed to push it back in myself, or is it supposed to pull it back in itself? I've noticed a few times where I'll pull out the choke, but it closes itself? What say you..?

Leaving the petcock on puts needless pressure on the carb shutoff needle and seat. There’s no disadvantage of turning it off. Push the enriched in yourself once the engine is warmed up and accelerating normally without hesitating. Don’t think too much, you’ll hurt the team!

Shores...Thanks! Only asking because bike is in the shop now because it kept turning off, and the mechanic (and others) kept telling me to leave it alone and don't put in OFF position all the time. Figured i'd get everyone's perspective here on the forum. Thanks!!

except you no longer have reserve on the tank.

You don’t have a reserve in your truck either. How many times you run out of gas?

FI has reserve. The light will come on with just under a gallon left in the tank. It just omits the need to have to manually switch the (non-existent) petcock to RES.

I don't shut my petcock off unless I'm puking my tank....5 olD Yamahas (1998-2002 models) 1, 2, and 4 carbs. No issues with 4 months stored with petcock on.

I always turn my petcock off every time I shut the bike off. Habit from old bikes and coming back to find all my gas on the floor. I think most on here actually leave it on.

I turn mine off. just habit. Also mine also pulls the choke shut on its own. sometimes. It also pulls it to the very last notch . strange bikes.

Right behind the choke knob is a round rubber nut. You can't really tell that it is a nut but it is. Carefully tighten it by hand only and the choke knob will stay out like it is supposed to. If you tighten it too hard you may break it as it is only made out of plastic with a rubber cover on it.

Hmmm...I'll have to check that out. Thanks, Davej !

**UPDATE** - Hey, I checked it and found it. I tightened it just a little and the choke seemed to stay 'out' when I pulled it, then i pushed it in after a few seconds of warming up. Thanks!!

I shut my fuel off about a minute before the engine to avoid carb puke that I personally have never had happen. It’s not to hard and will prevent a possible puddle to clean up. I also switch to reserve on a regular basis when I’m on the highway in case there is any water under my fuel.

The fuelies do have a reserve light that comes on with a little less than a gallon left.

I hope that "reserve light" is more accurate than the fuel gauges have been and doesn't share the failures that the carb'ed version fuel sending units do but somehow I get the feeling both the FI and carb versions use that same sending unit with a different low level warning set point on the FI.. .

I left petcock on last week and when i got off work there was a puddle of fuel under the bike on the pavement, boss had something to say about it. Now off every time i shut down.

I used to shut mine off every time I shut the bike down for the day, but the petcock started getting difficult to turn, so I have left it on for about a year now with no adverse effects. If I have to go to reserve I might be in trouble. I would pony up for a Pingle but from what I understand they aren't "plug and play" as they say, and now days, I'm pretty much consigned to being a plug and play kind of guy.

I always shut my Petcock off, always have, and always will.
Parking the bike in the garage, it's sort of scary just knowing that the float valve is the only stopping the fuel from leaking.
Fuel injected bikes, no problem, it has no float needle valve.

Had a 100 Puch or Sach as a kid in AZ. Can’t remember brand. Dad parked it in the utility room next to the gas water heater and we left for our annual vacation in AR. Can you guess what happened?

Utility room which was part of the house burned with some minor smoke damage to adjacent rooms. Neighbor caught it quick and called the FD. We were very lucky.

If there is a fuel pump it should not be a concern correct? The pump would stop any gas from getting to the carb?

I'm not sure if it will. I'm think it should.

I haven't shut it off since I did away with the fuel pump 10 years ago, except when I need to remove the tank...I might be crazy but I figure it keeps the carb full over the winter..
