  • Where is all the oil?

    Was watching a video about HD,s with oil tanks and the oil will drain into the crankcase over a longer period of time, will this happen to our R*,s also?

    Good question. I'm thinking it probably will, considering that you can't get a decent level reading on the dipstick without running it first.

      DK if it can leak past the pump. Is it circulated by the pump or just oil pressure?

        The pump is down near the bottom left side of the engine, isn't it. So seems like it would be pumping the oil Up through the engine... Or am I completely off in my logic?

          If you took a oil level reading after the bike as had time to get to operating temp and it was in the hash marks, Could you not take a reading after you have let it completely cool down and use that reading to verify that there is the proper amount of oil before warming he bike? Or would there be an issue do to the oil leaking out of the tank?

            Not certain, but I believe there are 2 oil pumps. One in the tank, and one in the oil sump of the engine. If you want to experience them... start your engine with the dip stick out!

            Anyway, my experience is that oil stays in the tank, as you can let your bike sit about forever, pull the stick, and there will be oil on it.

              Nope, just 1 pump, Sec. 2-24, 2-25, 2-26 in your manual

                In a semi dry sump design like ours, drain back IS possible without going through the pump. Since drain back is a random event, the only sure way to check the reservoir (and it’s not really a sure thing) is to instigate a non random condition that creates as repeatable a circumstance as possible to check the volume, thus the mantra of the oil check. This is the same thing you see with many modern electronic shift transmissions where they want you to cycle it manually through every gear so each solenoid opens in the valve body and a semi-known condition of fill exists. Pratt & Whitney aircraft engines are to be checked with oil at least 40C in temperature, more than 10 but no more than 20 minutes after shutdown. The not so easy answer is oil level sensors at a pre determined critical low point in the reservoir where all potential for drain back has been exploited. This system is not fool proof, because the sensors also fail.
