  • California Noise

So California, as some of you may know, has changed the way they enforce the noise limits on vehicle exhaust. What used to be a fix it ticket can now be an instant $1000 fine. Yay us. I've read all kinds of articles, blog posts, layer speak and so on about the change and what it may or may not mean. While I don't know anyone in my riding community or myself that has ever been pulled over for a loud exhaust, I just tack that up to it being a subjective infraction that led to a fix it ticket, so why would they bother. But now where there is real money involved, I believe it will be enforced more as a new revenue stream for the state or municipalities.

That being said, my bike has a set of Hard Krome 3" Big Straights on it. Anyone that has been around these pipes know they are very loud. Matter of fact DG, the maker of these pipes emailed me upon my req and said that any of their pipes will fail any noise testing. I've been searching all over for pipes that are legal in Cali, as well as might meet the ordinance of 80db and am getting a large headache. While I can afford a new set of pipes (well in the $700 range) I can't afford to give the state a big check for nothing.

So I come to all of you for advice, ideas, insight etc. While I will if I have to I would prefer not to re-install the original Ugly pipes and mufflers that came with the bike.

    Thank you.
Remember. No matter where you go, there you are.

I think my stock pipes registered 83 db...wow good luck with that one.

I had seen those a couple years ago and thats the first place I went to go look. Boom, out of business.

          Try making your own baffles.
I have the Hard Krome 2 into 1 side burners, and made a baffle out of exhaust tubing adapters from O'Riellys Auto Parts.

You can pick up some Bassani True Dual headers for $489 and get a set of used OEM HD Touring slip-ons / mufflers pretty cheap. Just make sure they aren't the ones with cats in them. You'd have to modify the mounting but it's doable.

FYI, I had the HK Big Straights on my old R* and tried just about *everything* under the sun to make them quiet, the *only* thing that got it anywhere near 80dbs were these cheap-ass baffles, but they made the bike sound like a lawn mower. And don't be fooled by so-called "Quiet Baffles". At best they lower the volume by 5dbs, they're intended to lessen the harsher, higher frequencies, and make it more pleasant to the ear... but not to drop dbs.

Let us know what you come up with.

I was considering this but the mufflers I found were too much. The ones you linked too are more reasonable. From the looks of your picture it looks like you did something similar? Do you think it would reduced noise enough to not get so noticed as my HK pipes? Other question is you said modify the mounting. Difficulty level? Not good at doing any custom work and have no one to help me. I'll look some more but this looks like a possible way to go. I just can't fork out 600 bucks or so and it not work. This is refund monies and not easily replaceable.

Thanks for the suggesting Doc and help.

Could be my Costco glasses, but looks like two different baffles.
Which did you use and where did you get them?

California is aiming toward only electric vehicles. Can you imagine the "thrill" of 'Fast N' Furious with electric vehicles? t

It's coming! Just a matter of time. There will be a select few who is bothered by our pipes, and the government would love to collect money off us anyway they can, taxes or fines. They would tax sex if they could.

Believe me the leaving California option is the best way to go for anyone living here. But with a kid and not able to take him with me, not an option yet.

The Bassani mufflers mount using tabs on the lower back side like this:

Click image for larger versionName:	s-l1600.jpgViews:	1Size:	17.1 KBID:	58657
The Harley Touring mufflers / slip-ons mount from the top, and look like this:

Click image for larger versionName:	s-l1600.jpgViews:	1Size:	107.4 KBID:	58658

If they're in good enough condition, you can easily turn them so the mount faces inward, like the regular Bassani, but you have to come up with a way to attach them to the support bracket. Possibly a piece of flat bar, drill a hole in each end and slip bolts through them. Only problem is, they may not align with the Bassani mounts and you may need to get a separate wider piece of flat bar to bridge the gap. If you can drill and cut with a hacksaw you should be able to do it and everything should be available at your local hardware store.

As long as they are *stock*, OEM Harley mufflers, they will most definitely be quiet enough. Just avoid aftermarket, otherwise they likely won't meet the 80db limit. Tons of brand new Harleys have their pipes removed before leaving the dealer, and the take-offs often get posted on eBay...

Now... and you didn't hear this from me... but you can find lots in the dumpster behind your local Harley dealership... Just be aware, it's technically stealing, proceed at your own risk!

It's all about money. I wonder if it's a one time fine/ticket? Kinda like Jessie James and CARB, all bikes he built after '98 weren't compliant, yet with the wave of the magic pen ($5,000 per bike) all was well again in Looney land!

I have the OEM pipes still in a box. Trying to avoid having to bring the hard bags back up to that "fat ass" look and the ugly look of the OEM mufflers.

Personally I wouldn't worry about it. Unless your a real dick when the CHP or a city cop pulls you over, I dont think their going to hassle you. I mean look at all the idiot's on their cell phones. They never get pulled over. I think they'll crack down on that out here before they start screwing with bikes. JMO. I like the sound of my Freedom Combat and paid good money for it, so they can go #@$% themselves.

Wow we have a state inspection here in NH and your bike can't measure more than 92 db max at idle to pass but man we don't have anything quite as stupid as Cal.

Truth is... 98% of the shit people love to talk about CA isn't an issue at all. Unless you're being a jack hole, you're not likely going to attract attention. And if you do get caught off guard, DON'T BE A DICK about it. Respect the officer and you'll more than likely be fine. BTW it was the Governorator [Ahnold] who implemented the sound ordinance. [Thanks DICK! ] Long story short, don't start nuttin won't be nuttin. Just show respect. If that's too much to ask, *you're* the problem.

P.S. That was intended for all the Non-CA people who like to bitch.

i went tdy to California several times, the lack of high humidity and pretty constant 70 degree temps sure was nice. Working at San Ysidro ( we call it skid row) not so much. Didn't get to see much more of California, we got ordered out for double shifts almost every day.
