  • Looks like the 1600 transmission recall is retired

Well, it looks like Yamaha is purging it's records and the recalls on the 1600 are no longer showing up.
Even though they recalled every 1600 ever made, the actual problem only applied to about 5 months worth of production.
They probably determined that all or most of those bikes have been recalled so the lookup is no longer available.

They may also be purging records on the bikes that they know have had all recalls and service bulletins completed.

I'm sure some people will now stress about their transmission locking up but the factory repair statistic doesn't support that fear.
I've worked at a Yamaha dealership for 10 years now and have never seen a single Roadstar transmission here for repair because of the 'problem' that initiated the recall.
I have three 1600 Roadstars myself, 2 without the recall being done & I'm really not worried about it.

If you have a bike that still shows up on the system as being eligible for the recall, you might as well get it done now.
Waiting for your bike to just wear out before having the work done is shooting yourself in the foot.
Roadstar engines rarely just 'wear out' anyway but the clock is ticking ...
Personally, I'm surprised they kept the recall on the transmission open for 15 years. Nobody does that. LOL

    * BTW, for those who think they get a 'complete engine rebuild' under the recall, you most definitely do not.
We do tear the engine down to the crank but you only get new top-end gaskets/seals & rings, plus a 4th gear pinion, gear & retainer circlip.
Everything else from your engine & transmission is reused.

My bike was built 9/01, is that in the 5 month window,? Funny, I called Yamaha last week and they told me that they had no info about that recall any more that it was too old, they told me to go to a dealer and they could tell me if it was done to my bike or not, I chuckled and asked them if the dealer had a better computer than Yamaha corporate

I've never been able to determine through the Yamaha website if mine was done or not, it just said no information available. The dealer has worked on it a couple of times and hasn't mentioned anything, if it's like a car dealer they are supposed to check for any
available recalls. Not sure if they do that or not, but I figure after 72k if it was going to break it already would have.

You are such a valuable asset to this site. I'm so glad Rock River decided to take on our little virtual community. I will continue to by my Dealer parts here, and thanks again.

I'm convinced that if your bike just doesn't even show up on the system that the recall was likely done.
With no open recalls on a retired model, there wouldn't really be any reason to keep it on record.
Obviously, every 1600 Roadstar ever built is now out of warranty with only a few EFI 1700s with a soon-to-expire extended warranty on them.

I don't think the XV1600 transmission recall was ever ordered by the NTSA.
I think it was voluntary on the part of Yamaha so there would be no requirement to maintain warranty records on them forever, much less offer free repairs & modifications 'ad infinitum'.
