  • to jet or not to jet

    Hey just wanted to ask for some advice on the need to jet. I have a 2001 midnight with Yamaha speed star exhaust and stock air cleaner with k&n filter. Do I need to rejet the scoot? if so whats the best solution. Thanks in advance for any advise.

    I feel you shouldn't have to rejet your carb. If you open up your air box for better breathing then you will want to rejet.
    Keep a eye on your spark plugs to see if your running rich or lean.
    Just my thoughts, others might offer better advice.

      I'm kind of with Duke on this 1. Check the plugs to see if rich or lean. You may have to open up the PMS screw to richen it just a tad. IMO the best thing at this point would be to do at least a poormans Bak and rejet. Poormans bak is drilling a couple 1 inch (I think) holes in the trailing edge of the air cleaner housing. If not 1 inch drill with a hole saw the largest holes that will fit in that area. Then a rejet will be needed but you won't regret it. Or spend the $50 on a K/n RC 1980 filter. I'm sure you could sell what you have to pay for at least part of the K/N RC1980.

        I was told years ago if all you change are the pipes no jetting is needed. If you change both the pipes and allow more air to the carb you need to re-jet.

          keep in mind the stock jetting sucks, The MPG is terrible and even a stock set up can be tuned to a better AFR than the rich AFR the factory tunes them too..

            A cheap clamp on k&n filter and rejet using Barons kit, adjustable pms screw along with increasing Yamaha oem pilot jet will get you a nice running engine. Who likes running a stock engine?!? Do it! You will not regret as Davej suggests.

              On the "99 thru 03" the air restriction is the air box it self. It really doesn't matter if it's a K&N or a factory paper air filter.
              Air inlet into the early stock box is very restricted. Open up that restriction, then hang on, because you'll feel your bike come alive.

                  I just installed the $50 K&N oval RC1980 air filter in place of the OEM monstrosity of an air box and the Baron's jet kit. Very happy with the way it runs, now if I can get my front brakes working!

                    What size main jet and pilot jets did you use and what is wrong with the brakes. If you used the Barons suggested #35 pilot jet we get it running a little better using a # 40 pilot with a 172.5 main jet and pms at 2 1/2 turns out.
