  • 14" apes questions

I know this has all been covered before in the old forum, but now that I can't search that info..well
I am looking at either 12 or 14" apes. I have had 12" on a past bike and know what they entails. With 14" will I need to extend the wires?
i'm thinking DNA monster apes. Anyone have any experience with them?

I have 12" on mine and made the wires work, I'd bet you could get 14's to work, but you would have to do the brake line.

thanks. I already have the longer upper brake line.. how tall are you if you don't mind me asking? would you consider going going 2" taller to 14"? It has been a couple years since I had 12" bars on a road star and can't really remember how they felt height wise

Go for a ride and put your hands on the top of the mirrors (if you have a throttle holder) to give you an idea. but yes, I want to go to 14" and I will likely just do it with Risers. I'm 6'1" but I have short legs (30" inseam) so I do have a tall body. I rode my buddy's HD with 16" apes and they were actually not too bad.

I have 15's and the wires worked fine routed behind the top tree. Longer cables and upper brake line.

A lot will depend on the actual shape and width of the bars. Taller bars with a narrow width and profile may work without messing with extending the wires but a shorter wide width bar may not.

                here is what I got.

                Rise: 14" rise
                Width: 35"
                Pull Back: 6"
Center Width for risers: standard 3-1/2" from center to center of knurls
Center Width total 1" portion: 5-1/2"
                Tube Diameter: 1.50"
                Width (at bottom, outside): 13-1/2"
Width (at bottom, inside width between risers): 10-1/2

guess i'll know soon enough if the wires will work.
My current bars are 34.5 wide and I like that width pretty well so I didn't want to go much wider.
As for the pull back and such, it's a shot in the dark as I don't really know what I want there. I did need at least 10" width in the lower inside for when I have the faring on and these are 10.5 so that part is great.
I hope the bars look as good in person as they do in the pick. $199 is by far a lot more than I have ever paid for a set a handlebars..but I really wanted these so I bit the bullet and paid the extra money. now I'll just cross my fingers and hope I didn't blow $200.... good thing it is only money

You may need to enlarge the outside edges of the risers for the 1.5" bars

My 15's are also 35" wide but I don't have any pull back. Like stated above, that could be an issue. I was expecting to do my wires and was surprised they made it. Those are sharp looking bars, going to look sweet.

If you do extend your wire through the bars , what should be done about those holes where the wires went into the control housings ?

You should be able to find plastic or metal push in plugs at the hardware store to fill the hole. I know they sell black plastic ones in the pullout drawers at HD,Lowes and ACE hardware. here are some examples.

Thanks davej , with that many choices, something ought to fit . Probably a dab of silicon seal to waterproof will work.

Next Question : anyone got pictures of routeing wires into handlebar openings under controls , so they don't get crimped ?

                • #11
Im running 14” krome workz Ape hangers. I extended the wires 18” to run on the inside of the bars. Im 5’9” 32in inseam and a Corbin seat and they fill great. With my old Saddleman Seat they felt just a bit tall.

Is there a certain correct way to route the wires into the Bar ends to avoid crimping ans breaking a wire ? This will be the first time I've done this , HELP .

Make sure to stagger the splices so there isn't a big wad in one area. I soldered then heat shrunk the the splices. Try to get it so a spice isn't on a bend. I've done this 3 times with no issues. Make sure the wires are spliced to the right ones.
