  • Is this carb puke?

So yesterday the riders group I'm in was in the Fresno, Ca. Veterans parade. While running the parade my bike go very hot like it did last year. The only difference was this year at the end of the parade we stopped for a little while to get the flags off the bikes etc before we headed to the American Legion post for lunch. When I went to start the bike it wouldn't start at first and was spilling fuel all over the left side of the engine. This happened each time I tried to start. I pulled the cover off the filter area and saw that just behind the choke pull knob the gas was coming out of a small port. The port was ribbed as if a hose would attach to it.

I let the bike sit for a while and finally it turned over and didn't spill fuel. Rode it to the post where I had lunch and it sat a couple of hours. When I started it up everything was fine. I rode it back home (an hour away) and it seemed to run fine. When I got home I unpacked the saddle bags and was at home for about half an hour before I went to start the bike to go to the store and it happened again. Spilled fuel over the engine again out the the same port. None of this has happened before even during long rides of 3 hours or more.

    Thanks for help.

Sounds like puke. Turn the petcock off 20 seconds or so before you kill the engine next time to empty some of the fuel in the carb bowl and make room for fuel expansion due to heat.

So turn the beak horizontal to the ground just before I shut it off.

Like what Shores said. You could check the fuel tank ventilation, make sure it venting right. Also you could lower the float level down 2mm to keep it from puking.

Ok thanks all. I'll figure out how to deal with the float in the carb, Never done carb work before and my long time ago history of having friends that worked on them always had issues. Not sure why. If there is a float issue, is that something that over time and vibration could change since this is something new?

From what I have read here from other folks, I’d say don’t mess with the float first. Go pumpless instead and truly solve the puke issue.

I started out with shutting the fuel off 10 seconds or so before killing the bike when I knew it was hot out. Was just the short term solution until I got around to something else.
(and the bike was running great, good response)

But after I ended up putting the open K&N air cleaner on I did not have any more puke.
The air cleaner allowed more air flow between the cylinders than that stock alien head one and I quit turning off the petcock.

The float setting won't change over time, it has to be adjusted by bending a tab on the float itself.
If you haven't had carb puke problems in the past, then I would leave the carb alone. Make sure the venting for your fuel tank is working good.
Like what Shores said: shut the petcock valve off about 15 to 30 seconds before turn off the engine.

When mine "Puked" earlier this summer it was the needle & seat. So.... I replaced it with the Grizzly 660 needle & seat (2C6-14190-30-00) and went pumpless. I also replaced the PMS Screw with a Baron BA-2150-00 and installed a Baron Jet Kit BA-2420RD and put on a K&N RC-1980 Air Filter while I was at it. No more carb puke, more responsive and more adjustment.. Win.. Win.. Win.. ;-)
