  • oil level confusion

i bought my bike about a week ago or so.first thing i did was join the roadstar clinic to learn a bit about the bike,,then i changed the engine oil and filter..now all i had was the little handbook that came with the bike.in that book it said the amount of oil to put in the bike is 4.1 litres..so i did that..poured in exactly 4.1 ltrs and didnt bother to check it as the bike is like new and definately has no leaks.so the wife and i jumped on her and headed off for a hundred mile ride and it was all good..well today i managed to get hold of a factory yamaha workshop manual an in that manual it is saying itll hold 5 litres, its very confusing..and the routine in the manual for checking the oil is a lot of mucking around..
this is the handbook i got with the bike this is what the handbook has to say so i did that ..4.1ltrs factory workshop manual

Just 4 quarts for an oil and filter change. A dry motor that had been just rebuilt, will hold 5. A motor that has simply had the oil changed will only hold 4. Not all of the oil drains out.

The 5 liters/quarts is for a completely dry engine. For a change, drain the oil (crankcase and tank). There are 2 drain bolts. Change the filter. Add 2 liters/quarts and run the engine for 15-30 seconds. Add 2 more liters/quarts and close it up. No need to check it at all unless you're leaking.

Just make sure and put the dipstick back when starting the bike briefly, after the first 2 quarts are put in.

Checking the oil on the road star is indeed surprisingly complicated and often confusing. (Like that sentence) But like you said, they don't use or lose oil, so the rule of thumb is put in 4 quarts / liters and leave it. Just be sure when you drain the oil, that you drain both the engine crank case *and* the oil reservoir. There are two different drain plugs one is on the front left the other is on the right rear. And don't make the mistake of draining the transfer case either. It's right next to the drain bolt for the oil tank. Too much oil can actually cause problems. Some R*s suffer from sticky valve syndrome, SVS, due to too much oil.

Like they said... don't even rethink it! There's more than 300 years of collective Road Star expertise here. I learned to put the oil tank dipstick in, between adding 2 quarts at a time... the hard way! It can make quite a mess..........

But, you'll only do it one time!!!

From Oregon. I think you got all the tips you need on oil.
