  • How Much Collective R* Knowledge Here?

Hey, guys! I've a question that I think the answer to would enhance the Clinic experience for newcomers! We've newbies joining and asking questions all the time.

For those of us who are mechanical types, and do nearly all our own maintenance and repairs, as I do, how many years do you have with your R*... add that number to the collective number in the post above yours. How many years might it actually add up to. I bought my first R* and started learning and working on it in the summer of '07.

So, let me start off with my 11 years of experience first.... you tell us how many years you've been wrenching on your R*, and add it to the number of years from the previous post. I'll bet it gets into a couple or three HUNDRED pretty quick, as I know we've a good number of long-time members and wrenchers here! If nothing else, every new member will know he's come to the best place in the universe to get his R* questions answered, and any problems solved!

Add that to my 11, and we've got 28 years with just the first 2 posts... Add 'em up, guys!

      28 plus 6 = 34.

    We're fair mechanics but math

Three years with a roadie here. I think that makes 37 total.

I've got 7. That will make the total 44.

About 6 years, IIRC. That makes 60.

So much of what I know, is built upon those who initially started the forum. They did so much to demonstrate the practicality affordability, and flexibility of the Roadstar, years before I ever bought my first, I hardly feel like I’ve done much other then repeat stuff they worked out.
A lot of the early guys are gone. I would suspect total membership including those who were only here a short time, might be well over 25k.
When I started, the archives amounted to going back to the original post in each sub forum, and following the threads there. We could still do it at the time. There was a search function, but all of the post were there for the reading, for those who wanted to take the time.

The “Pumpless” stuff was pioneered long before I showed up. IIRC, the proper gravity flow Grizzly needle and seat showed up about then. I didn’t remember much talk about anything other then the Suzuki valve when I did my first.
Actual, real time AFR stuff contributed by Davej Smokescreens, and others aided a lot in getting to proper jetting. The discussions prior to that, seemed to be centered on how lean can you go and still get the bike to run, and how turning the PMS out, was somehow better then the proper Pilot jet. The number of people who lost PMS screws from having them turned out 3 to 4 turns has diminished considerably. Oddly enough, a lot of the CV jetting discussion at the time was done by guys who had ditched the CV, for a HR. Prior to the AFR stuff, it was a given, a 35 Pilot was just fine. There was a lot of reaching around your arse to scratch your elbow when it came to sticking with a 35 Pilot. Good riddance.
The customization work performed by many of the members, has been nothing short of outstanding. I think of Strike3 and knutlesmurf(??) when I say that, because they were contributing members during my time here. Not to dis any of the lower budget creations we’ve seen. We’ve seen some really neat and clean Bobbers.
We have had and currently have, members scattered all around the globe.

Five years for me. Saving up for another bike. So far owned 2. Because of the forum, I have attained some unicorn parts. Got an excellent fuel pump and cover for a great deal from a great member. Lots of advice including safety tips. Learned about the Big Bore Road Stars, and bought one and never regretted it. Learned about the Big Ed seat, never regretted it (going to buy another). For a discontinued bike, we are holding strong as a forum.

7 years for me with the Roadstar, plus decades as a Honda and HD mechanic.

Total is 89 years I think

118! Nah, I'm just talking about years of experience wrenching on R*'s, meaning those of us who do all our own maintenance, and nearly all repairs. I'll still with my 11 years, though I do have 3 R*s!

Quest, you're never gonna get these guys to keep up the tally. 137 is where I think it is now. IDK if I should add my 6 to it as I only do the easy stuff now days. I have the knowledge, just not the physical prowess to implement it anymore.

I'm with you, Doc... if you've got the knowledge from experience to share and help others with... 'specially the newbs, we need to tell 'em. It's already up to 143 years, with PO's 6 added, like you said.

                  • #19
IF I've got it right... we've got 16 respondents already... and, the count looks like at least 143 years of combined Road Star maintenance and repair knowledge that we're capable of sharing with one another here already. And, I know we've got a good many more experienced and knowledgeable guys to add their years to our running total. 16 of us, and 143 years, for an average of some near 9 years each!

I’ve had my bike for 6 yrs but really only working on it for the last 4 yrs. not nearly the experience that a lot of you have but I’m still learning and this forum is the reason I take on jobs I previously felt uncomfortable doing.

so 4 yrs for me bringing the total up to 147
