  • 180 miles, 67 bikes &22 no-wavers.

Right now, in the chewy middle center(?) of Arizona, the weather has switched from Demon Heat into Paradise Mode. For the rest of the year, and through next April, every day will be perfect or near perfect riding conditions. This is why we tolerate the super hot stuff. Yesterday, I rode 140 miles going to the bank, picking up prescriptions, and just cruising around. Today, I had an agenda, my 160 mile around the block ride if you will...Florence to Superior to Winkleman to Oro Valley and back to Florence. Elevation changes from 300 feet to 5500 feet. Spectacular examples of God's handiwork on display, like gnarly mountain-sized stacks of rocks, and the Saguaro Forest, and, oh yea, I encountered 67 other bikes on my trip, 22 of which did not wave back. Goldwings, dresser / bagger types and BMW's most unlikely to wave. 86 degrees today, no wind, perfect running bike...yep, pretty sweet day. Hope yours went as well or better

Did you keep track of what the snobs were riding?

Two out of three wave-backers is an acceptable ratio in my book.

That is truly an awesome part of the country.
Perhaps during this time of the year you should change you name to "Father Lucky Bastard".
I love the smell of smoked pork in the morning !

I am a lucky bastard, but it's actually Basturd, with a "u". Bastard would be durogatory. I'm not into self-deprivation. Bas-Turd (the "s" is silent) is the art of sculpting using a fecal medium.

Don't feel too bad about the Beemer riders, it's the same here too. I think they're too busy calculating how far they can ride before the cost/benefit ratio is exceeded and it's time to trade their bike in for the latest and greatest... That and their day glow yellow riding suits blind them so they don't see other riders coming their way.

Ah, BMW... according to Consumer Reports frequency of repair polling of all their readership... the MOST frequently to be repaired brand on the market.

And, the least frequently repaired, most reliable brand was... The envelope, please. Yamaha!

And, by the way, BMW was an outlier. It was far and away the most unreliable brand. Hey, I didn't say it! Consumer Reports did!!! Now, if I also went on to say that not too much better than BMW, and also an outlier, considerably well beyond all the other brands, was... The MoCo. That isn't brand bashing, is it?

Some of the nonwaving behavior may be fear of riding holding the bar with just one hand or task management. such as having to look ahead and keep the bike upright. Some of those guys cannot chew bubble gum and change gears at the same time. Others just cannot be bothered. I wave and find the scooter riders seldom wave back. Probably due to the death grip they have on the handlebars. Or maybe they are in shock someone waved in the first place. Guys in motorcycle clubs seem to shy to wave also.

Around here it has become a real challenge to keep up..I mean even the cagers and pickups are waving...............
not all those who wander are lost......

How many fingers do they use?

            • #10
Depends on how fast you can move. Their fingers are their count down device.

Great description, PB. Love riding AZ. Beautiful roads, long lazy sweepers, perfect weather. Going to ride out some time between now and thanksgiving.

Hope you have many more times during this perfect riding season!

There's plenty of tight, technical roads too. Try ascending South Mountain near Downtown Phoenix. Really cool thing is, when you get to the top, you can see (almost) the whole city (s), and how it's laid out in a grid. There's this big sundial-looking thing up there at Dobbins's Peak with arrows that point to major landmarks like Four Peaks, Camelback Mountain, White Tanks, and so on. Very cool. Sometimes, on the weekends, Indians will be up there selling their jewelry until the Park Rangers run them off.

I wave to anything on 2 wheels. I found waving to bicycles and electric scooters is a waste of time. Sometimes the guys riding gas powered scooters may wave back. They probably feel they are the outcast riders of the motorcycle culture. They deserve respect due as scooters are more dangerous to ride than a motorcycle. Guys riding electric wheelchairs wave back, They seem to get it. I accidentally wave at bikes when I am in the van at times unknowingly. Force of habit. They do not wave back and look at me as if I am some kind of weirdo.

LOL! I will not deny the truth when it is submitted. When I was playing in rock bands back in the 80's my weirdo-ness was at its all time peak. One night there was a contest to break a water bed. If you got on the bed, jumped on it and it broke you win a water bed. I dressed up like a WWF wrestler with a long-haired wig and called myself "Buster Bladder, World Famous Bed Breaker". I challenged the females in the club to jump on the bed and see if we could break it. It was for fun and I did not think anyone would be crazy enough to take my challenge.

But one did. She was drunk and ran up to the bed with bloodshot determined eyes. Sort of like a bull let loose in public ready to go nuts. Reminded me of a Moose in rutting season with only one thing on its mind. She got on the bed and told me she wanted me and tried to grab me. I was hopping on the bed like a scared rabbit, and she kept falling over trying to grope at me. She finally locked on me and told me she was taking me home with her. I was freaked out and didn't want to get the dose as I assumed she was morally unsound. She said she knew I was the drummer in the band but wanted me to stay in costume when we do the monkey dance at her place.

After throwing up in my mouth things calmed down and the band got up and I played the final set. At the end of the gig, I beelined it to my car and took off, evading the drama of a groping groupie. My plan backfired, but I escaped in one peace.

Yea, right...we all know the drummer and the bass player are the last ones to get any groupie action. It's OK, no one's gonna judge you if you married her. Everyone can change. Once you got her off the booze and crack, I bet she was just fine.

When I was younger, I was the same way. I'd fuk a snake too, if someone held it's mouth.

I have developed a "feeling" about who will or will not wave. Not always right. Used to bother me. Now the only time it bothers me if they only wave one finger!
