  • The amount of dumb PART 2

Discussion on mpg on FB...here is what one genius posted.

Having a windshield on makes a BIG improvement in mileage. You're taking away the wind resistance factor. ALSO. Compression must be good. Weak ER compression will mean less power and mileage. Then, you've got the usual components. Carb setup, exhaust, plugs. The oil you use will also factor in but might not be much. Some oils don't provide as good economy as other brands. Granted, there aren't as many bike brands as there is car brands. NOW, if all that checks out. There's always the option of a TOUR TANK. It's an aux tank you tie in to the fuel system. Instead of 5 gallons you now have at least 6 to 11 gallons. Depends on how many gallons you want the tank. I have a 3 gallon I was using when I owned a 94 intruder 1400. Upped my capacity from 4.3 to 7.3. I can't find the link at the moment but google might help you. The company i ordered mine from is in Phoenix.

Another from the same person regarding mpg....says we only need 5hp to run 100 mph with no wind resistance....

It's also called aerodynamics. Take wind resistance out of the equation and you only need 5 horsepower to propell you 100 mph. My bikes get better mileage with the windshield. Aerodynamics. Look at semis. They have fins on the back of their trailers. Skirts on the bottom. Plastic between the tires. Covers on the rims. Trailers hugging the truck. All to decrease wind resistance. Oil DOES effect mileage. I've seen it on semis and my own car I just bought. 28 mpg with dealer oil change. 36 mpg with oil i use now. Different oils have quirks that most of you don't know to look for. It takes a whole list of things combined to get the best mileage possible without going to the lean side.

People who think that know everything are very annoying to those of use that do.

What are you guys blowing about? He's right oil does effect wind resistance. Everyone knows that. It's like tire size effects gravity which effects MPG as well. Bigger tires result in better mileage because it increases the effect of gravitational pull which causes an increase the vehicles reduction in friction. You guys just need to do the research on the web. I can't find the links to this right now but it is there somewhere.
        Go ahead, I dare ya.

you should see the mpg bump i got out of my fairing! and it reduces drag so much that i do. mach 1.35 at idle

Your idle screw is set too low. With a fairing and your idle screw set to potato, you can expect only Mach 1.35. If you turn it up to 900 hash browns, then you can at least get Mach 2.01

People have ridden bicycles 100+ mph on flat ground. Giant legs, rediculous gear ratios, and drafting behind a purpose built wind blocker driving in front of them.

          Irrelevant but interesting..

I find a big increase in fuel mileage when I ride mostly on roads that go down hill and even more so if I have a tail wind.
