  • Key dilemma 2.0

OK, so, here's the deal. I order a new key blank for my bike on ebay. I have my bike on Ebay motors so I go there, pull it up, put key blanks in the search engine, and up they pop, no worries, right? I have done this exact thing before, in fact, the key I have is one of the blanks I bought off Ebay before this exact same way. Anyway, it gets here, and it's the wrong blank, but it does match the keys in my new ignition, which will go in my gas cap but will not unlock it. So, I get out my magnifying glass and get the part # off my old key, which is, oddly enough HD74. I look that up on Amazon and it comes back to a Honda M/C key. WTF??? Am I going friggin crazy or what? So I ordered th HD74 blank and will have it cut when it gets here and, hopefully, that will unlock the cap. Can anyone possibly shine some light on this?

Somebody switched caps on you. You did say you bought it used, right?

Yea, six years ago. The gas cap and ignition key were the same until my ignition messed up. If the cap was switched it wouldn't be that way.

That's a bizarre one... I know it's not uncommon for mfgrs to use standard suppliers, i.e. Showa forks, Brembo brakes, etc. Maybe Honda and Yamaha use the same tumbler supplier? IDK...

Get the cap lock picked and then dissemble it and gut the pins. It’ll still lock but any key that’ll fit the hole will unlock it.

It may come to that if this new key won't work.

If you pull the tumbler put the key in and look for protruding tumblers sticking out past the tumbler body. File them flat to the tumbler body and everything will work just fine. We just had this type of conversation with someone else the other day. I also gave very explicit instructions on how to fix a sticky ign switch on that thread.

How do you pull the tumbler if you can't get the cap off the bike? How do you file the protruding tumblers if the key won't go in the cap? If I could remove the cap, even by destroying it, I would just get a new cap.

I thought you had the cab off, In your post you made it sound as if you had a new ignition because the old one was messed up and and now the new key don't match the cap. It also sounded as if the old key still opened the cap and you still had the old key. You didn't say you lost your old key or that key you have been using for 6 years wouldn't get the cap off. at least not that I seen.sorry

father pobasturd, there are some here that did think you were crazy or always been a yahoo, many years ago, but Ive always stuck with you and value your often right field , but unbiased opines. We love you man.
good luck with this hurdle, my ignitions are funky, these days i hit them anually with dry lubricant, conversely thinking, allow a day or 2 to "soak in".
FOr those of you not in the know:
HD 74 is an acronym for:
                    HD : harley D
74: 74 cu inch HD motor (back in the day , way after WWII, HD had 74 ci motors, (1212.64 cc)

                      FUN FACTS:

Star motorcycle key blanks are ILCO # YM63.

Double cut keys like ours only use one side of the lock for tumblers, they allow us to stick keys in either way & still work.
Because of this, you can cut a new key blank to fit 2 locks, you just need to mark the key so you know which way fits which lock.

If you want a new 'Shooting Star' key blank for a Roadstar, I have some for $10 each shipped in the USA, $12 to Canada.
If you want these & call the store the OEM versions are $42 each (yeah, that's not a typo), plus shipping.
The ones I personally have for sale are not sold through the store & are not OEM, but look & work exactly the same.

heres a secret too. leave the damn key in the ignition at home, ya wont lose it. put it in gear, hit the kill switch, off the gas, if u have kids. not too many folks wanna muck with an 800 pound beast.
