  • Correct Tire Size for 2005 RS

    Hi,

    I've seen several posts on the web site already and there seems to be a few different sizes people prefer so I'm a bit confused as to what the correct factory tire size is?

    I just found out the tires that I have on are 8 years old, which makes me a bit nervous. I really like the look of the white wall tires, can anyone recommend any white wall tires with the highest grip? I'm not bothered about fast wearing tires I'd prefer extra grip, I'm lucky if I get 1,000 miles a year on the bike so fast wearing is not an issue.

    Thanks.

    130's on the front;
    150's on the rear.
    I love the smell of smoked pork in the morning !

      Shinko 777s for grippy whitewalls. Low miles. I got 19K and 13K out of my last Metzeler 880s and 888s.

        I just looked them up at JP Cycles, a couple of people moaned about how quick the white wall yellowed, did you notice the same on yours? They do have the Dunlop CruiseMax on sale, still a fair bit more $$$ but has good reviews.

          Dunlop’s suck and will cup at about 5K. I’ve never had white walls yellow because I clean then occasionally and easily with Simple Green and a Magic Eraser. Three wipes and you’re done. I miss my white walls since I had a tire emergency this summer and couldn’t get white walls. A totally different look! Jake Wilson is cheapest. Don’t forget to go to the manufacturer website and get your $50 rebate per set.

            Stock sizes are 130/90-16 front and 150/80-16 rear. I prefer the slightly taller and more round profile of a 140/90-16 on the rear. Wider tires weigh more than stock sizes and don't give any more contact with the road. No gain, in other words, just a more expensive and heavier tire. Heavier tires take money out of your pocket and performance away from your bike. More unsprung weight equals more work for your suspension. More overall mass degrades from acceleration overall, but a heavier rear tire also requires more torque to accelerate, making the engine work harder. The heavier rotating mass requires more friction from the brakes to slow it down from a given speed, and the linear deceleration requires more as well, because the overall mass is higher, so the heavier tire bites 6 different ways into your performance. If you are all about looks and being seen, so be it, but be aware that you are installing a deficit to your performance by installing larger tires. This is the same on automobiles.

            Wherever you go in life, ride there if at all possible.
