  • NTSB wants ABS on all bikes...thoughts?

I have no experience with ABS on motorcycles, even my goldwing doesn't have it. Maybe folks who have it and have experienced it in action can pipe in?

Not really sure how this discussion is going to go, but I have a strange suspicion it's going to get Hot.
Hopefully it doesn't get Hostile as often happens.

If it's as transparent as it is on the Yamaha bikes with ABS I don't have a problem with it at all.
It works great and you don't feel or hear anything but it stops you immediately.
Only adds about $200 to the price of the bike so I don't really see a down side.

If it's as gritty feeling as the HDs and BMWs I've ridden with ABS I'll pass.
I don't want to hear or feel it working, I just want it to work invisibly.

I have it on my Indian not intrusive (to me) it doesn't work until you are going over 5mph. Between distracted drivers, kids and animals running out in front of us etc etc gives a little piece of mind that the wheels won't lock up on you in a panic situation

It would have helped me save some broken bones last summer but proper braking might have helped also. I want my next bike to have ABS.

I test rode an Indian with ABS and did a semi-panic stop with it, didn't notice it being that intrusive either. I would like to have it on a bike but i know that is a personal preference.

I would welcome it. I can easily lock up both wheels. It's real scary when the front wheel starts to slide!!!

Like many that have ridden for a long time, anti lock would have likely saved me some skin and money in the past. As Bubba said, if you don’t know it’s there and there is no alarming feedback or pulsing to induce that instinct to react to a sudden change, I think it’s a great idea. Currently with a price point market, it’s an easy cost saver to not employ it. I rather like the idea of the MIC electing to adopt it as a standard, rather than it being imposed by government.

Wherever you go in life, ride there if at all possible.

I'll just have to try it next time I'm in for a test ride. I imagine it'll feel weird at first, not that I'm not accustomed to it on a car, but I'm so used to freaking out about not locking the wheels in a panic stop on a bike. Old habits, et.al. Anti-dive would be nice to have, not sure it needs to be a regulation...but the way the roadie squats under hard braking can give you a heart attack.

Upgraded suspension kills that over travel on the fork under heavy braking.

Just watch. It's worth so much more than opinion.

My opinion is that I'll never buy a bike without it again. I don't normally lock up my brakes. It's only happened once, but it's better to have any safety feature than to not have it an need it. Riders always say "keep the shiny side up". ABS is one of the things that actually helps you accomplish that.

One of the comments below the video - "Don't you hate it when your brakes lock up and you instantly fall asleep" My sides disappeared.

Just like any of the other electronics on bikes these days. They work very well and can react much faster than any human being is capable of. Quick shifters, auto blippers, traction control, lift control, ABS. They work.

I hate the idea of any government mandate for the stuff because it violates my principles. However, guys that hate on this stuff because they say they can do better make me laugh a bit.
