PMS closing all the way doesnt do anything

    Pondering whether 172.5 4th clip is too rich for KN univ filter and stage 1 -should get 40 mpg and need choke to start

      Well hell, this is a mystery. How about try putting the stock PMS back in to eliminate possiblites? A 172.5 and clip on 4th groove should be fine. Besides, the main jet and needle clip don't really effect the motor at idle. What about your enricher knob? Some have recommended trimming the backside of the knob to allow it to fully seat. Try taking it off the mount under the fuel pump, loosen the rubbers side too and push it all the way in to see if that makes a difference. I don't know about 40mpg, some achieve that, I got it on my 1600 but I average 34 and 37mpg on my 1700.

        Yeah but how many of you guys actually only have stage one which is 6 half-inch hole drilled in exhaust and cone removed ? The main jet does deliver some fuel at idle or just off idle you can see it slipping up around it you getting sucked into the engine

          If you're still running stock pipes, [my apologies, I missed that part] even drilled out, then you probably shouldn't be jetting for aftermarket pipes. This thread had been going on so long I can't even remember if this is a 1600 or 1700 we're talking about. If it's 1600, go with the 35 pilot and 167.5 main, if it's the 1700 the 37.5 pilot and 170 main. Start with clip on forth groove, if you still don't get a response from dialing in the PMS, then move to 3rd groove.

            stock pipes stage 1 exhaust, all 3 of my RS's, , KN universals, 1700's, all same jet kit, same knurled PMS needle so u can adjust on the fly. one my brother bought from me, but im his mechanic. when i set them all up the same, they still have minor running differences. without dino, we just do the best we can. i may try the 170 main next . optimally bike should be hard to start without choke, and feul efficient, you can tell if it is too lean, when it backfires out pipes on decell, or idle does NOT snap back down in a timely fashion and runs hot. i really like the stage 1 exhaust, its free, and has good OEM heat shields and crossover. just enuf rumble. a rich bike still runs well, buts gets poor mileage. there is a relatively wide range of Air fuel ratio that wil work. i guess the FI bikes should be a good indication of actual attainable fuel mileage we should expect on a properly adjusted carb model.
            2 points of note: a joke
            carbed RS 's are faster than FI.
            especially the black ones.

                FINALLY got the bottom of this on this bike, although the choke was pushed in all the way, the plunger was pulled up slightly on the carb end. BAD CABLE, scabbed one off spare carb. good to go now tho, may have to put back 37.5 idle/pms jet
