  • “Tail Wag”

I have 2 major projects coming up soon.
    1) install my RAP (bought one a long time ago, just haven’t gotten around to it)
    2) want to eliminate tail wag. There was an article about how to do that on the old forum. Was that preserved somewhere?

This is my 4th post this morning. Coffee anyone?

The tail wag issue was on the early 1600’s. The rear fender support was woefully inadequate, and caused the fenders themselves to flex and crack along the edges, just behind the subframe. Later years even by 2003, have better reinforcing, and by 2004, the problem was pretty much gone.
If the wag is very pronounced on your 2013, make sure your idle is set correctly.

The only ones I’ve seen with tail wag (in videos) were suffering from a too low of an idle and going into harmonic resonance and this occurs when two interconnected objects share the same vibrational frequency. When one of the objects is vibrating, it forces the second object into vibrational motion.

Yamaha’s offset connecting rods create a secondary vibration rocking the engine from side, to side.

Thanks. Maybe I’ll video it and you guys can tell me. Looks excessive to me. Idle seems about right to me, but I’ll try to post a video.

If the idle for the Fuelies is the same as for carbed bikes, it’s 900rpms.....

Ron would know this, because he like you, has a fuel injected Roadie.

I know on mine, getting the idle right, got rid of a lot of wag.

No tach, so no idea where it’s running.

Click image for larger version Name:	image_4406.jpg Views:	1 Size:	43.4 KB ID:	28012 You can’t adjust the idle on a fuelie. My fender is more stable with the stock saddlebags and mounts. Weld in braces to the sub frame. It won’t stop the wag, but will prevent damage.

That’s probably why. I toook all that off. I have some quick release bags I use. And took off all the std hardware that it came with.

You could also install a gyro in the tip of the fender!

Wouldn't it just rot in a week or so?

Just between you, me, and the gate post there is an idle stop screw adjustment on the throttle body set at the factory. I’ve seen it with my own eyes, too.

Thanks. Is that a true idle adjust or just tightens the throttle?

I wouldn’t pull your leg. Get a flashlight and go see for yourself. Peek over the air box and you can see it.

No leg pulling accusation here! Have you adjusted yours?

I currently am having this problem and trying to fix it. If anyone has a copy of the old post or ideas i am open.

remove the sub frame under the fender, repair any cracks or broken welds then beef it up like in the pic above.

So my 09 fuelie shouldn't have "tail wag"?

They'll all have a little shake-n-shimmy to them. But the earlier models would crack and weaken the fender causing them to sway in excess. I don't recall hearing of any of our later models having such issue.
