  • My first vinyl wrap experiment... Whudya think?

This is something I've been wanting to do for a long while now... it's just an experiment, so not sure if I'll leave it, fix it, add to it or just remove it. Anyway, I'd ordered 4 different metallic red vinyl wrap samples to find one that matched close enough to my factory paint. The online photos don't do the samples justice.

The wrap cost me $17 on eBay and I still have plenty left. I may do the saddle bags too... The gold pin-striping I picked up for $5.99 at my local Autozone.

Not too bad if I do say so. I could have done better, but it was my first time and I was in a hurry... I did it this evening. I can still go back and clean it up with a razor blade if I really want to; but I'd give it a 20/20 grade as is. Good enough from 20 feet or doing 20 miles an hour... truthfully it's more like e10/10 and I could easily make it a 5/5. And a 1/1 with a little more practice.

    So what do you think?

My past experiences with vinyl and sunshine have not been very good. But it looks good now...

Me too. It's hard to see from the photos, but there are some imperfections, mainly little bubbles, but from what I've read, they should go away over time. You can see one of the bigger ones in the last photo; it look like a drop of water but it's a bubble. The worst though are the edges. I used something called Cut Tape that's like pin striping with dental floss. You pull the string and it's supposed to cut the vinyl nice a clean. Unfortunately some edges came up wrinkled and not straight, that's the stuff I mentioned I could clean up with a razor but it's unnoticeable from a couple feet away.

That looks pretty damn good. Your pinstriping is a bit wonky in places, but over all, damn good for a first try.

Yah, the pin striping was even more rushed but I did it to cover up the bad edges. I'll probably remove it, clean up the edges when I have time and do it again. You get enough in a roll for both sides of a car, so there's plenty left.

Looks great! I tried to do the same thing but my vinyl wouldn’t match my orange paint so it never got installed. Did you cover the batwing with soapy water before installing vinyl? It really helps you squeegee out the bubbles and once the soapy water dries or evaporates the vinyl is stuck perfect.

Finding one that matches is the trick. Like I mentioned, I ordered 4 different samples to find one close enough. It's not 100% but pretty damn close.

That looks pretty damn good!! I should've went that route with my fairing that has been at the painter for almost 3 months now. How long did it take to do?

It took about an hour for just the vinyl, and that's because I had to start over a couple times but finished using the same piece I started with. The stuff is amazingly resilient and almost impossible to f-up. If you get little wrinkles in it, you can pull the vinyl back up, and using a hair drier to warm it, they will relax and it regains it's natural shape. Even if it sticks to itself you can just pull it back apart no problem. The batwing was a bit tricky because of all the compound curves but I realized the trick was to start from the middle and work my way out to the edges.

The pen striping took more like 10 mins.

Man that looks really nice! I tried once to replace the vinyl on the number plates of my motocross bike and ended up throwing it away. So props to you!
