I'm not sure if either of these would fit your style, but the Yamaha V-Star 1300 and the Stryker 1300 are lighter and a much better performance then the Roadstar. They are water cooled, EFI, and have a 5500 rpm redline. They have much quicker acceleration, but still have decent low end torque and handle better. Definetly not a sport bike, but much different ride than the Roadstar.

the stryker might be worth looking into. I have thought about the raider but not the stryker....the V-star is to similar to what I have been riding.

anyone have any experience with the FZ8?? I found one close to home for about 3k... 10k miles 2011.. looks like it may have had a light drop, and defiantly needs a wash job and maybe a chain.

This is about as good as it gets that I’ve seen for used Raiders. Already has great pipes and ECU also.

just got home from looking and test riding a FJR1300, WOW what a bike.. wish I had gotten more then about a 10 minute test ride on it. It was an 05 with 30k for $3300, ran/ rode like new. had a couple small scratches from falling over off kickstand. very minor and scrathes were up and down not sideways. almost not noticable. lights didn't work on low beam (odd) I was going to make him an offer when I figured I had better sit on it for a little bit and think it over. On the ride home I started thinking that maybe that is more bike than what I am looking for... as for now i've got to head to bed, work comes early

The first bike that came to mind was a Triumph. The second was a Sportster. Even better would be a Sportster bobbed with tires like the 48. An alternative would be the Yamaha Bolt, a different type of ride to the big twins for sure.

If you're considering the FJR style sport tourer, you should really check out the VFR. I've always had a soft sport for them and that V4 just sounds friggin awesome! It's got to be one of the best sounding bikes ever made. Plus they've been around forever and usually owned by more mature guys, i.e. not as much the crotch-rocket squids, so you'd have no prob finding a good example in your price range that hasn't been abused. And it's not a *scary* bike but seriously fun with a strong following for support and aftermarket. That single sided swing arm looks really cool too. I personally like the earlier styling, but if you're patient, I'm sure you can find a newer ABS version in your price range if you really want the ABS.

Just listen to that sound!! Gets me fizzin down stairs...

that does sound pretty cool. looks like it still has an upright sitting postion too... you can't tell me he coulldn't turn that bike around in the street at the end. I could make that turn on my electraglide. lol

The VFR does sound bad ass. I heard one uncorked that sounded like a NASCAR going by.. Still, I think you would like the Monster better. Seems like more of what you described. I found 3 900cc Monsters on Phoenix C/L under $4K. And they sound bad-ass too.

They do sound good. Different for sure. Very similar to the cross plane engine to me.

Although I still love the sound of a screaming inline 4 at 10k plus.

That's what I was thinking too. Reminds me of old school Grand Prix cars. The R1 cross plane is definitely right there too.

Well Doc, if all goes well tomorrow, i'll have one of these.
I ended up buying a VTX1300C. It was a real nice bike, but the forward controls were to close for me. So I sold it and was lucky enough to make about $400 on it...
Since then I have still been looking and trying to decide what I want. hundreds of hours on ebay, CL, and youtube. I was looking pretty heavy towards the FZ1 and FJR1300, but think they maybe more power than I'm looking for.
I found a 2003 SV650 that went up on CL today for $1000 needs gone ASAP.
I talked to the guy, he sounds legit, just needs some cash. Said bike has a little idle surge but otherwise no issues at all. (send me a video) I was going to get it tonight but he works second and wont get home until a little after midnight. I am suppose to meet him tomorrow nite during his lunch break to pick it up. We agreed that it is sold, but I know how that can go too. Maybe tomorrow morning someone shows up and buys it, or he changes his mind..
Hopefully all goes well and after tomorrow I will have a new toy to play with... i'm excited
