not a fan of the shovels, plus it would still be just another cruiser bike... raider would be nice if I could find one within budget.

To me, the shovel is the best looking engine HD made. Would love to have one

at the moment the FJR1300, FZ1, and Honda 919 are at the top of my list I think.

If I was gonna get a third bike, I'd look for a decent Honda CB77 305. A black 1966 one.

A CB77 would be on my list, too. But I just spent my <$4k on a nicer seat for my wife that came with a matching bike...

The 4000.00 budget will work it takes some searching. After rereading the original post I would buy this just for taking out some aggravation at the end of the day!!

Fjr 1400 probably not fit in to this site or the 4 grand price range but sweet and nimble

If you just want something to putt around on, Honda 350 Dream is a great little bike ( if you could find one) had one when I was 17, now I wish I still had it.

I like the look and sound of the oldies. Anything pre shovel won’t be had for 4 grand. I wouldn’t by one for my main ride. I get as much enjoyment wrenching on rain/snow days as I do riding.
i had to go rescue a friend on a pan shovel last August on the way to Sturgis. He got sick so my wife and I went to get him. I rode it home a couple hundred miles. I fell in love. I haven’t seen any flat side shovels in the 4g price range either but a guy can dream.
I really want to ride a raider to see if I like as much as I think I would.

FZ1 is my choice for what you’re asking about. Make sure you wind it out if you want to experience real power.

I’ve heard the Generation 1 bikes are the best for whatever reason. 4 carburetors always makes me a little nervous but if it’s running right, it’s fine I suppose.

dude, your R1 is way more power than I know how to handle. I would really like to get something a little sportier, and lighter..better performance both with the gas and brakes, cornering.. I have had 25 motorcycles, but never any type of sport bike.. the sportiest was prolly my mid 70's kz650, and the fastest probably my C90.... One of the little 600 crotch rockets would be great power wise, if they didn't make them feel so small...
I'm kinda torn between the FZ1, FJR1300, and the Honda 919 or some other type of naked bike... I like the idea of the naked bikes, but not sure how much I would ride one... I live close to Celina (so not a lot of curves close by) The R1 would be way over kill for where i live... the FJR or the FZ1 would make it easier to ride the hr or so it takes me to get to some decent roads... I don't balls to the wall ride like you do (although I wish I was that good)
I don't like the idea of 4 carbs either, I swore after my last CB750 that I would never buy another 4 carb bike, but, time has a way of changing thoughts sometimes. I'm not sure if the FJR1300 is carb or EFI, i'll have to look into that. Have you ever riden a FZ1 or FJR?
.... maybe you should sell me your F6B for that same $5500 and keep the R1
owning a motorcycle is not a matter of life or death, it is much more important than that

I for one would love to have a 1985 Knighthawk 700S Honda. one of the most fun street bikes I've been on. And fastest, (back then). Black with the blue trim. docile and nice riding until you hit that 8000 rpm and then you better be hanging on! Slid my fat ass back on the seat and made my hand twist the throttle more! No bending over the tank, nice upright sitting position but when your going over 100, you better not poke your head up over that little windscreen!!

My first *real* bike was an 82 Nighthawk 450. Sweet ride... Beautiful too with the Burgundy and chrome racing stripes...

Personally, I've always wanted a Triumph Bonneville, but you might have to shop around a bit at $4k. I've owned a Sporty, and it was a great bike, a dime a dozen and lots of fun; but damn *small* gas tank. And while I know you said no sport bikes, I've always wanted an SV650; just a total blast to ride but not super aggressive or too fast. A Raider is also on the list but you'll never get one at that price point; you might be able find a good deal on a Stryker if you're willing to compromise... [I wouldn't]. There are lots of cool Beamers too for not too much money but the upkeep costs make me a bit leery; they have a lot of drivetrain parts that need replacing as they get older. I've always had a fondness for the 80's and 90's K bikes. Or the airheads; they're built like tanks. And of course, you can always get an older Goldwing if you want a big tourer that's bullet proof. Or even go with a Silvewing if don't want all the plastic and buttons. The Moto Guzzi motor knockoff CXs Honda made are pretty cool too and definitely different without all the Italian temperament but still a cool V-twin note. I would say an early CB750; super cool bike and a total classic, but I owned one and the brakes were wooden, the suspension wasn't the greatest and they weighed a ton... or at lest they felt like it. A striped down V-4 Venture would be another good bullet proof bike... Maybe a old V-Max... I could do this all day long but I'll stop there. My fingers are getting tired.

this guy makes the FZ07 look a little scary. (I don't know how to ride a wheellie)

I wouldn't worry too much about the FZ07 unintentionally coming off the ground; you have to want to do a wheelie. [I can't imagine Yamaha would sell if it that were the case.] I did ride the FZ09 for about a hour and was seriously impressed with the throttle modes. That's the beauty of these new drive by wire systems; there are modes great for cruising around town or having fun; it's like have a different bike at the push of a button.

if my wheel came off the ground like that guy in videos did, I would probably shit my pants, and then when the front wheel came back down, I would have a splatter going up to the back of my neck,.. not the way to look cool when you pull in somewhere. lol

Then again, maybe another CB360. I had a '74 and it was bullet proof, and got 75 mpg. nowhere near anything considered fast ,but a great dependable ride back in the day.

If the bars are the only thing holding you back from the SV650, you can always add risers and there are a tone of SV's in your price range. Get an early naked one, like in the photos, and it doesn't look too "sportbikey" either. I'm sure JD will attest their virtues.
