  • you have $4000

    So here is the scenario:
You have a big v-twin touring bike, and you have your Road Star.
You have a chance to add a 3rd bike to your stable with a $3500-4000 max limit. You are average size (6' 195#)

Here is what you are looking for.
something different than what you have that will add a different type of fun back into riding.
a little lighter, good handling, good brakes, maybe ABS or ride modes. should have an upright sitting position. water cooled a plus.

No big heavy V-twins ( cruisers), adventure touring, enduros, crotch rockets.

ok: sport touring, classic style (new triumph, or older inline 4), naked, street fighter, maybe chopper (like raider) or possibly V-twin bobber. maybe sportster or bolt style.

what would you buy and why

FYI: i'm probably not buying, just what if thinking
owning a motorcycle is not a matter of life or death, it is much more important than that

Maybe a UJM like the the CB1100 or similar. I would go for a 750.

gotcha, thanks. I'm kinda digging that look too.... but of course my first bikes were from the early 70's so I may be a little biased... I love the new Kawasaki Z900 (I think it is called) but it would be a while before those were down to a price i'd be willing to pay.

that's the problem, i'm a motorcycle aholic. I like so many of them, but I can't have them all.

A Dirtster would be pretty cool, As would the Bolt or Scrambler 950. The latter would not meet budget though. Even a Dirtster would be iffy..

Here is an image search - lots of high dollar ones, but some good ideas there...

Kawasaki 650 Verseys ABS with lowering kit, $4000 get you a 2009 plus. Don't think this is an off road bike cause with 17" cast wheel it is not. Tons of fun to street ride though.

A former coworker of mine was at a bike store and the salesman told him if you ride this you will want to buy it. He took it for a test ride and came home with it...

here are some of the ones that I came up with today while thinking about this at work.

Adventure: FJR1300- a little big, but has a lot of potential, and could be ridden far enough to away from just the local roads
FZ1- don't know much about these. I love the look except from the side view, I hate the way the fairing sticks out away from the bike.
      Bandit 1200

old style: Triumph T100, T120, older inline 4, newer CB1100

street fighter: honda 919 hornet, fz07, fz09 (FZ may not fit in budjet)

Naked: SXR900, SXR700 (may not fit in budget either)

Other: another roadstar bobber project, (fun, but have done it), Raider

Ditto on the V-Max, excellent bike for setting your hair on fire!! I had an XS1100 Midnight Special and a friend traded for a few miles with his V-Max, total animal when you want it to be. The wife saw me on it and said "Nope", but that doesn't mean I have to take her with!!

I havent researched any but have thought about it more than once, would love to get a dual sport of some sort. The idea of riding a distance on the roads, THEN going off road, THEN having to ride same said bike back home, sounds like challenging fun to me.

Funny you should say that... Before I got my R*, I went down do buy a Drifter, cash in hand. I came back from test riding it, and the guy said, "I'm sorry, but I *just* sold it to someone else over the phone while you were out riding it". Seriously??? WTF???! ...But I owe that guy and his POS behavior, if it wasn't for him I wouldn't have got a R*... Irony of all ironies... A month later, he called me up asking if I was still interested in his Drifter... "Sorry buddy... I already got me a R*!"

Bought my son a 2016 FZ09 Yamaha about a year ago for $6K so I am sure you could find a 2014 for around $4K. Hell of a little bike for the money! Light and fast. If money were no object I'd wait for the Indian 1200cc tracker rumored to be coming.

I really like the FZ09's.. finding one in that price range might be tough "but not impossible" I wonder if a 50 yr old guy would look stupid on that sporty looking of a bike?
