  • 2003 Road Star 1600 vs 2005 Road Star 1700

    Hi Everyone,

I'm new to this site but did have access to the old one, Little back ground i had a 2001 road star about 2 years ago which i sold. I'm looking at getting another one and i have found two that I'm in the middle of speaking to the owners. The 2005 owner I'm still pending a response, I was expecting to go today to pick up and have not heard back. Little concerning but trying to not to think too much of it. Would like to get your advance on which one is a better deal, I'm kinda of leaning on the cheaper one but clearly the 05 seems to make a better sense.

2003 6,900 miles. Custom pipes, hyper-charger for 2500.00 original owner

2005 23,000 miles, Stage 3 carb kit pipes by Yamaha for 3000 original owner

Personally, I like the 1700 better, 2005-2007 they fixed a lot of the issues on the earlier 1600's.
FYI, 23k miles not an issue if that's a concern, these things can go well over 100K with minimal issues.
If you get the 1600, first thing I'd do is replace the Hypercharger or remove the butterfly. I haven't had one but many people say they are hard to jet properly because of the vacuum operated butterfly.

I'd go with the 05. Issues were fixed by then and cast wheels are a +.

I would go with the 2003 myself, clean the carb and ride. Isn’t the 05 prone to svs?

Yes, but it's easily kept clear of it with proper maintenance and preventive measures.

Just so you know the second one is an 04 1700 not an 05 unless the tins were swapped with an 04

Is there such a thing as a stage 3 carb kit? My impression is guys just rejet based on their intake and exhaust. Is someone feeding you a line?

I don't know, that is what they placed on the ad. I'm thinking that the 05 or whatever it is will not happen they have not returned my message. I like the fact the the 03 has lower miles, but was curious if the 1700 motor felt any better from a performance perspective.

05 to 07 is carbed and has the upgraded charging system if your gonna bag it with sound system.

Ha! I actually saw one ad a while ago stating that the '02 for sale had a big air kit which made it a 1700.

Buy the 03 and don’t look back.
As far as performance goes, simply pick up a 04 to 07 ignitor, to replace the one on the 03. It’ll boost the rev limit to 4750.
You can replace the 33 tooth front pulley with a 31, and get more grunt if you think you need it, but Roadies are torque monsters even with the 33.

The single biggest difference, is gonna be the charging system. The newer system on the 05, is a better system.

I've had a hypercharger on mine for over 11 years and have had no problems. I love it.

In my opinion both those bikes are overpriced by at least $500. I paid $2500 for my 2006, and that was 5 years ago. Either talk them down or wait...you can do better. With that said, I would go for the '05

I agree, but I’m in NY and the going prices are from 3k to 4K.

IF the second is actually an '04... I have 2 '01's and 1 '04, and I can tell you that I can feel a performance difference between the 1600's and the 1700's... it's there, and it's real. But, personally, I'm thrilled with them all, and whichever one you get, you're gonna love!

Thank you all for your suggestions, the person with the 04/ 05 never got back to me. I didn’t get a good feeling about trying to buy a bike from them. I ended up getting the 03, typical story guy buys bike because friends have bikes, friends stop riding, move away. Guy stores bike in garage and rides once in a blue moon. On top of that he was moving and wife said you don’t use it bike has to go we are downsizing. There was one little issue the choke would not stay out when I try to start it, I needed to hold it for a bit, but when I push it the bike starts to shut off.

Update: I tightened the choke to the right prevented the choke from going in so quickly felt more normal like my old one used to. Prior to doing that it warmed enough that it stayed on but sounded like it just wanted to shut off. Took it for a spin, man has it been a long time, I swear it feels more powerful than my old one but I know that it can’t be true.

Tighten the red ring not the nut below it, be careful it's plastic!

I did NOT know about the red ring. I have one I can't seem to keep out when starting, and have been trying to get it to stay out by working the plastic nut... I'm now going to look for the red ring! Thank you, that's been bugging me for a long time!

Lol, dont't be looking for a red ring now, it's only red cause I painted it red in the pick to highlight it.

Run about 10 to 16 ounces of Seafoam thru it with the next tank of gas.

Not a big fan of brown but I really like that! Not very often you see a brown bike, kind of sets it apart.
