  • what kind of helmet is this?

who makes this type of helmet? are these snap on shields? what do you call this style? is it still just a full face? I want one so I can ride without the face shield and have it still look decent.
owning a motorcycle is not a matter of life or death, it is much more important than that

Bell is making one like that again (ancient design) and that Biltwell Chinese outfit. Couldn’t speak to the quality of either one. If you are not spending 300 or more on a helmet, it’s not much of a helmet these days.

Wherever you go in life, ride there if at all possible.

I've seen something like that called the "Castel".

Here's my 1964 Bell helmet that I use. It's still in great shape.

Riding a motorcycle is about honoring the past as much as racing toward the future. Here are the perfect helmets to do both with style, grace, and safety.

is that true on price. Don’t think I’ve ever spent more than $150.

Well, once you have had a truly GOOD helmet, you easily spot what is bad about cheaper helmets. I run full face, year round, every ride, and I can destroy a 150 dollar helmet with sweat alone in less than 2 seasons. Non durable assembly, thin fabrics, poor ventilation, noisy shields, poorly oriented chin strap anchors, non removable and non washable liners, the list goes on.

Oh, I was more wondering about the actually safety, if I didn’t care about the other stuff. I mean, if they are DOT, should be good, right?

im not challenging or arguing. I’m thinking about getting a nicer full face helmet. One with blu totooth, so I can listen to music, or whatever. It’s nice to have for long trips.

my main helmet is a half. But, that’s for fooling around in the summer. If I get up on the interstate, I like to have a full face helmet. I have one now, but it’s really uncomfortable.

I had an old cheap Icon helmet before. It was a full face and I thought it was nice......but then I spent some good money and have a Shoei now. The Icon is junk by comparison. I cant speak for the safety but in comfort and everyday use, the cheap helmets just don't make the cut.

Something to keep in mind also is that the DOT rating is based on the honor system as far as testing goes and is the lowest standard out there today.

I used cheap helmets for decades until I got a Nolan Trilogy.
Like jd750ace said, once you have a really good helmet you really see where the cheap ones fall short.
Until then it's just a price tag with sticker shock.

Pretty sure that's the Biltwell Gringo. Also check out the Bell Bullitt. Similar retro styling but probably the best helmet i've ever owned.

If you want a safe / good helmet look for the SNELL rating.
                                    DOT & SNELL test differently.

DOT only tests helmets for resistance to intrusion directly from the top ... and only the top.
SNELL tests for intrusion from the top, front, back & both sides.

So basically, DOT test helmets like they are only used as worksite hardhats.
That's why you'll see legitimate DOT stickers on those goofy little beanie helmets.

I bet this would even meet DOT helmet certification standards.

Is anybody partial to shoei for full face? I know they are all different, but I have a sedici and the lower cheek foam is falling out, the out visor flew off on the freeway because the plastic attachment on the side came loose and the screw came out with it.. now I just ride with safety glasses or safety-sun glasses.. but for the money, I want a helmet that will last. recommendations? I even like the oldschool ones as well, but I'm more partial to full face.
