  • Anyone running Avon Cobra tires?

I'm running 18" wheels. Just ruined my rear tire and need new one. Avon look good but I have never used them before. Any input appreciated.

Tires opinions are much like oil opinions. I run Avon's Cobra's and am very satisfied with them. The Benchmark in my opinion, others will differ.

I agree. Good to know you have no complaints with the Avons. Thanks

Started using the Cobras on my RSV last spring. Flippin' love them. Kind of scary though as they are causing me to push my boundaries in corners. They track through them like I am on rails. Loved them so much that I put them on my Road King and Ultra Classic. Going to put them on my "new to me" roadie before I get it on the road in the spring even though the existing Pirelli tires have several miles left on them.

Oh, and I got rid of the tire weights and use Ride-on exclusively now.

That's a lot of Cobras - thanks for your input

JimH runs them and is very pleased with them. Good tires. Would be my choice if I ever wanted to run a whitewall again, but I can’t even keep the chrome clean. I’d be running brownwalls.

Whitewalls look nice if you can keep them "white" - I too have a hard time keeping the chrome clean. Thanks for your response.

I'm on my 2nd set and have gotten good service from them.

So UT14, the "I ruined mine" part sounds like a story, can we here it?

Not much of a story. I seem to have become a nail magnet. 2nd rear tire in two years with a nail in a spot that can't be repaired.

I've been running AVON Cobra Front & Rear tyres on my 2005 Road* 1600 for about 10,000 Km's.
Although I have limited previous experience with Cruiser tyres I'm mighty impressed with the performance from this pair.
It seems they have the stiffer sidewall construction that heavy cruisers need and a tread pattern that technically favors the dry but lacks nothing in the wet.
I weigh only 80 Kg and ride solo most of the time, but my Road* has the kind of torque that rips and tears any sub-par compound. These AVON AV71 and AV72 have held up brilliantly over the Sydney Summer - I now expect to get at least 15k and won't hesitate to buy more when it's time.

Have a friend that runs Avons and he has great luck with them. I am on Metzelers and will probably try the Avons out when the time comes.

The Avon's are on my list to try as well. I'm not getting the mileage out of my 888's that I would like, Well the Rear at least.

I'm thinking the Avons are next on my list as well. I too am not getting the mileage expected out of the 888.

I don't know yet about the mileage on the 888's but their slippery little buggers. Thinking about trying the Avons as well next time.

I had a mileage issue with my last rear Cobra only getting 5k out of it. However I like the handling & ride improvements over other tires I've tried so that I gave Avon a second chance. I also contacted Avon about the 5k mileage issue and they advised me on the tire pressures I should be running in their tires according to my riding styles. I have 3k on the rear so far and it seems to be holding up great. I really dig Avon tires. I take corners like I'm on a rail now and feel like I'm glued to the road. Big thanks and shout out to Ironman Tom for recommending them to me.

I ran continentals that I was happy with handling, but got 7k on rear and 11k on front, so went with the 888's to try them out.

So, just went and checked the mileage on my 888's on the 2 up bike, 11.6k on the rear and 6.3k on the front. The rear looks like it is getting close.

I have been through 888 and several others. Been happier with the Cobras. I have noticed a big difference in handling. I know ever one has an opinion but min is the one that counts with me and I and staying with the Cobras on the next set I get as well. They are a bit wider than others and it is noticable from behind with my two bikes next to each other. So one babies got back at least.
                            Go ahead, I dare ya.

This is comparing both bikes with the exact same size?

The Avon rear measures right at 160 mm wide, labeled as a 150 mm. Compared to a M CII at a true 150mm it is a noticeable difference when seeing them side by side.

Been running Michelin Commander 2's on the NW Pacific roads since I bought my '01.
Dumped the Dunflops and never looked back - getting 16K miles front, 12K rear, no issues dry or wet, 38# front, 49# rear, I am 160#... riding solo.
Love to see my two tone with white walls, but not willing to give up tire mileage.
Longevity is important to me$$$ I am aggressive with my right hand!
