  • throw out bearing exploded

xv1700 .. pulled side cover.. bearings are in there along with other bearing parts.. reordered everything.. looks like bearing were eaten in there.. could not recover all of them.. oil and parts are shiny metallic .

used magnet to find more bearing but no luck.. is that ok for best effort or do I need to get crazy looking for the bearings? assuming they have already been liquified..

going to put it all back together.. run for a few hundred miles and then change oil to remove any additional metal flakes..

is there anything else you can recommend I do during this failure?

While you have the clutch cover off, see if you can find any pieces in the oil pump pick-up using a hooked wire. There is a screen in the pick-up that blocks debris from entering the pump.

Throw out bearings aren't gonna liquify. On my Barnett spring conversion pressure plate, 11 bearings are in that one. I finally got all mine out ...PITA

        No other damage inside?

I'd be pretty reluctant to put it all back together and fire it up at all, let alone ride it, if I hadn't made every possible effort to get everything out of there. Who wants to have to do it again?

Doesn't sound like a happy project to have to take on.

I used air nozzle in dip stick tube and in the plug above the oil tank while drain bolts out....sat on bike and shook and shook....then I filled crankcase with 1 gallon of diesel fuel (all buttoned up) and sta on bike and shook and shook some more. Then drained overnight. Found the last 2 ball bearings doing this. The problem is those tiny little ball bearing stick to the oil on about any surface and don't just fall out. Then I filled the crankcase with cheap oil ran it for 10 mi came back put a bunch of seafoam in the oil ran it again for 10 mi came back drained it put fresh synthetic oil in and was good ever since.

When looking at the diagrams I'm not sure those ball bearings would actually make it into anything important or not but boy one of those tough little boogers could get in between some gears and cause some damage and maybe lock something up. I didn't want to take a chance.

Did you have any signs/symptoms that something was wrong with the clutch? I have the Barnett plate in mine for about 30k without problem. But would like to know what to look out for?

If I recall correctly, there were several bearings from an old batch that were put in backwards.

                  • #11
They may have had a batch installed wrong. I know there was a couple people here that bought and installed the new style taper bearing and installed them backwards and they exploded in a short time. lol

Yup. Before I installed mine I called the bearing manufacturer and asked SPECIFICALLY which way they should be installed. The lady on the phone out me on hold for a min, came back and told me the "correct" way. She was wrong. So my Barnett had a failed original bearing (but not exploded) and then the new 6003 I installed grenaded pretty much instantly after starting the bike and pulling the clutch lever a couple times....bang

Were there any signs that something was'nt right before the complete failure of the bearing? Something like play in the clutch hard to shift, something like that or is it instant failure?

The bearing squeeled on the second to last ride. Sounded strange transitioning from clutch on to clutch off. What was really weird is that the clutch was kinda free floating in and out on it's own in the last couple minutes before failure. I think you'll hear something before failure and should stop or risk the situation I'm in.

Do I need to open the right side of the bike up to look for bearings? I've stuck the magnet in as far as I can on the open left clutch cover side.

I guess you didn't read Lug Nuts post Groups above explaining his thoughts on leaving some in the motor, if you want to risk it it is your call nobody else's.

See a number of people saying bearing installed the wrong direction but no one actually says what the correct way is???

If your going to use the # 6003 stock bearing, then it dosen't matter which direction you install it. It is a deep groove bearing.

If using the 7003 or the 7202 Angular Contact Bearing.

Have a Barnett plate about to go in. Received a new Yamaha KOYO bearing today, 99306-00315. Comparing the bearings the Barnett one looks to have smaller balls and the cage is floating around, you can move it sideways in the bearing. It looks like a $2 Chinese piece of shit, glad I bought an OEM one to replace it. Will take some photos comparing the two when I punch it out.

Well the Barnett bearing is total crap. It was equivalent to a pushbike neck bearing, a Chinese one at that. Disintegrated getting it out and Barnett have provided 3 cutouts just for this purpose. I would recommend that anyone buying a Barnett pressure plate replace the bearing with an OEM one regardless.
