  • Freedom Duals - Well Sh*t

I've lusted after the Freedom true duals ever since I saw them in person when I went to Eureka Springs in 2019. But not wanting to drop the $$$ they command I've sat on the sidelines. Fast forward to a few weeks ago, I picked up a set (some might say I stole them) that was a return to Dennis Kirk that was "damaged". Of course if you were to walk by my bike I'd have to point out exactly where those blemishes are as they're barely noticeable. Plus the bike has a chip in the paint here and there so it all fits

A recent discussion here regarding them I knew that the rear O2 sensor would require a bit of finagling. So I was prepared for that. However, it seems the front head pipe is an issue as well. I expected the O2 bung to be in a similar location to the stock head pipe for the front cylinder. But in this case it's about 8-10" further back. The O2 port on the pipe is back near the end of the middle drive case and the plug on the frame is near the front. So it looks like I'm going to be building some O2 extenders. Not a big deal as the source I've used for other OEM connectors (cycleterminal.com) has them and they're just a few $$. I presume those members with Freedom pipes have the O2 sensor forward in the stock location? I'd not hear of anyone having issue with the front pipe.

I have freedom performance true duals on my 2008 and I did not have to add 02 sensor wire extenders. I merely opened up the corrugated plastic conduit that surrounds the wires and pull the wire back to where it needed to be to connect to the sensor. I can't remember if I cut a slot in the conduit or just cut it back some.

Did you have to do that for the front pipe as well? I guess I just assumed it was for the rear jug only.

It's been such a long time that I just can't remember. But I do know that the wires were restricted because of the corrugated plastic conduit that was wrapped around them. I may have even cut a hole in the conduit at the proper place so that the wires could merely come out to reach the sensors. Don't let the conduit dictate where your wires go. You could always redo the conduit which is available at auto stores.

They say your memory is the first thing to go when you get old.
I can't remember what the second thing is.

When I did my Bassani on my '03 I didn't have to mess with oxygen sensors obviously but to get them lined up perfect as a bit of a chore. You'll want to have it either on a lift or have somebody sit on the bike and hold it up straight when you're doing the final fitment and may have to add some spacers washers nuts or something to one side or the other to make them really level and flush and look nice. Otherwise when you drive down the road it looks terrible

I had it up on the bike jack so it was level. It was slow going as the heat shield clamps were a pain as well. But all in all it looks good.

I have the crappy Cobra pipes on my bike (came with them on it) and there were the 02 "foolers" connected to the wiring harness even though the 02 sensors were in the pipes. I too did like Shores and pulled the rear connector out of the wire loom and it reached the rear sensor. The front sensor reached w/o alteration.

Thanks for that input. I already had found the proper connectors and ordered them. So I'm just going to build extenders and thus won't disturb the OEM harness. Shouldn't be hard to do and less than $15 total in all the parts.
