  • Should I open up a can of worms!

Had the Transmission recall done end of November 2021. Never really rode the bike before this was done. Bike starts right up and runs good. I noticed there is some valvetrain noise. (Hear the valves ticking) But its only in the rear cylinder. Front is quiet as can be. I am wondering if I should get in there and check em out. I wanted the recall done when I was working so I can see what it all entailed but our tech (who no longer works with us) did it on a monday, when all staff is off and only a few tech work. He was know to throw things together sometimes not in the best way. Im wondering if maybe he threw the push rods in there and maybe swapped a few and now they are out of spec.

I am running Redline VTwin 20w50 in her too.

So yeah, should I open it up in your opinion? Or just run it and dont worry about it.

Just run it! Hydraulic lifters will do their job and making sure the valve is open at the same time. It's likely to get noisier if you mess with it. Never heard of one of these engines having an issue because of noisy upper end.

I keep hearing that insects and worms are going to be part of our diet. I have not yet gotten hungry enough to open a can of worms. Just something about a nicely cooked Ribeye keeps me away from a cold can of worms.

You have two options one Leave it alone Do not touch it yourself under any circumstances to or bring it back to the dealership complain and see if they will pretend to look at it and they'll tell you that they took it apart and measured everything with a micrometer and had a NASA scientist come in special on the space shuttle to inspect it. And then they'll tell you it was just fine and Usher you out of the building. Just ride it.

It was done at my place of work. And the tech, is no longer with us.

I hear the NASA scientists have all the "special" tools for scooters.

Nah, now they just use AI to keep it simple. Elon Musk is working on a hover version of the RS.

I just found it interesting how the front cylinder is quiet as can be yet the back one has valve noise.

If it wasn't like that when you took it to them then I need to fix it. I'm assuming you already checked the oil. My 1600 trike is noisy as hell. I went in and changed the lifters the lifter cases, and adjusted the valves, and it still has valve noise like the Pistons or rod slapping, but runs like a clock. Don't smoke, that was 3or 4k ago , 66k total now miles. Is gas fresh?

Wasn't there a lot of talk several years back about the rocker shaft or some other part in the top of the head that could be noisy? If I recall right Shores did a mod to his '08 1700 that helped quiet it down. If I recall correctly the 1600 was different in some way so the mod wouldn't be the same. I think in the end it was decided it was the nature of the beast and not really something detrimental to the engine.

The 1600s have a solid rocker arm shaft and the 1700s have a hollow shaft which could possibly make it louder with lateral rocker arm movement. The hollow shaft is relatively easy to drill out but the 1600s not so much. I think Duke was working on a special bolt or something to solve that.

Can of worms? This might do it.

This is for motors with load dependent *excessive* top end ticking/knocking; beyond simple rocker adjustment or “normal” R* engine noises. Initially it only happens under heavy loads, like going up hill at speed, and gets worse over time until it happens all the time, even under light load on throttle and stops when you let

Have read the whole thread with much interest.

Question for the techies. What are the oil passages like up to that noisy cylinder? Is it possible something is plugged?

Oil that feeds the rocker arm comes from the lifter, thru the push-rod tube, to the rocker arm.
The oil lines that go to the head on the left side, is oil to cool the valve springs.

The only thing I can think it might be is the Valve clearance needing adjustment

funny thing is that we usually tell people that mention noisy upper end is that it is normal. and it is. There is even a tech bulletin out on it. I would be wondering what might be wrong with the quiet one.lol

Thats another thought I had. I think I'll just run it. No need to take it apart if it runs I guess.

I just never really rode it around much before the recall, So I cannot remember if it was louder or not before.

the 1700 has 1 odd ball length pushrod. If you put it in the wrong place bike won't run correctly. It is even mis marked in the manual in one place. So you better note pushrod location when you remove them.
