  • Are upgrades worth it?

Probably a matter of personal perspective and looking for opinions from those that have done the mods.

Mine is on 01 Silverado. Runs and rides well, looking to add the mods I've always wanted. Not looking to cross country with it, days trips and the like with my wife.

Is it worth adding a fairing, true duals, stretched hard bags, to a 22 year old bike with 30k miles on it? Probably $2k in expense, not concerned about mechanical ability.

Wondering what others think after having performed the mods vs those that may have "traded up" instead. Looking to go with a Street Glide if I were to go newer.

This is her before new tires...appreciate your insights

It's all up to you on what you are wanting out of your bike. Make your bike the way you want it and that your happy with it. Some of us like all the bells and whistles, and some like it plain. JMO

30,000 MI on a bike that's been known to go 200,000 is no big deal. To me the street glide would not be an upgrade. To me an upgrade would be a Yamaha stratoliner or a venture/eluder.

Good point regarding longevity of these bikes. Bigger Yamaha cruisers are rare around Albuquerque

Let's say your bike will bring $4k if you sold it this spring. Add the $2k in upgrades that you're thinking about adding. If you sell the bike without the upgrades and kick in the $2k you won't be spending, you'll have $6k to buy something else.

What will that buy you? Maybe add another $1k in cash, now giving you $7k total for another bike. Worth it?

I'm a 'ride it and enjoy it' guy. My bike would benefit from some upgrades, but other than practical things like going to LED lighting and fresh tires and the like, I'm not in that crowd. But I have a LOT of toys so I have to spread it all out. If your bike is your 'pride and joy', then what the hell, make it all it can be, including big bore kit and the like. It'll last you a lifetime with care, and there you go. Age of the bike shouldn't be a concern. I have an '01 as well, Midnight Silverado, and enjoy the hell out of it when I get a chance to ride it. I've had much faster bikes, and prettier bikes, but that's not what this bike is about. It's about sitting my butt down on that big comfy seat, listening to the rumble, cruising down the road with authority, and having a blast every minute I'm on it!

      Can't go wrong--

I can buy three road stars for the price of one harley. I don't buy motorcycles for an investment. Extremely low maintenance headaches and hassle are an advantage of the road star and other Yamahas.

I spent many dollars on my 07 pig, I would not do it again though and would upgrade the suspension before I added more weight to a bike that was overloaded without a passenger. Click image for larger version

Best upgrades that are well worth the money (imho): E.D. Seats, floorboards, RoadWing adjustable suspension, crash bars, LED headlight, LED driving lights and Run/turn/stop LED rear signals.

Upgrades I love: tsukayu hard bags (I would get the jumbo bags today), windshield, backrest, luggage rack, PUMPLESS, higher viscosity front fork oil, K&N air filter, New Freedom true dual exhaust and Michelin Commander II tires.

Tools I wish I’d known about when I got a metric bike: JIS screwdriver bits. I wouldn’t have stripped out soooooo many screws using the wrong drivers.

          Ratl.

At the age of 65+ my modification choices are things that are related to comfort, reliability and ease of use.

At 76 years old, why add-ons would be this.

Her upgrades seem to have been worth every cent she spent on them.

money spent uprgrading any bike is lost upon resale, metrics worserer than harleys. better off selling bike OEM, and selling the parts for a few K more. buyers dont understand that a bagger has 2000$ more options than naked bike.
