  • Opinions on aftermarket passing lamps

I am considering these aftermarket passing lamps as I am having trouble finding OEM parts for mine since the accident. Has anyone installed these cobra passing lamps? What are your thoughts and opinions on aftermarket assemblies? Is the cobra quality worth the price tag? I also have LED light assemblies that were originally for a Harley. Would they fit the cobra buckets?
Let Cobra be your guiding light in the world of cruiser motorcycles. We have a wide array of spotlights, light bars, and lighting accessories for your motorcycle. All of Cobra's light bars really shine and, best of all, bolt right on to the stock triple c

Can’t answer your question, but whatever I would go with I would go with nothing but LEDs and this day and time. Damn fools can’t see regulates I can’t see LEDs.. but that’s what I’d go with.

I think from a quality standpoint the Cobra product is fine (although I like the OEM bar better personally from aesthetic standpoint). The only concern I would have is that I don't believe the Cobra bucket is as deep as the Yamaha/Harley buckets. So an LED may not fit due to depth issues. But that's just something I "think" I've heard but not 100% certain.

I have a set of LEDs I bought off eBay that I think were listed as fitting Harley and found that my Yamaha buckets were too shallow. I’m pretty sure I have the Yamaha light bar assembly but I could be wrong. It matches all the info I have seen so far on it

Another option if you're not in a big rush.

The company is out of Poland and I have no knowledge of them outside of a member posted about them here: Link

According to the post it took about 5 weeks to get the part.

Seemed happy with it when it arrived. But I don't think they post here to comment on how it's held up and if they're still as happy. Just a thought.

The company that made the OEM assembly?

NOTE: Lightbars are designed for fitment on stock motorcycles. Installation of a windscreen may cause clearance problems.

I have 2 stock light bars that I would sell. 1 is decent and works fine. The other 1 has been repaired and it isn't pretty. i didn't repair it came that way on one of my bikes. Almost impossible to post pics here so email me and I will send pics direct to you.

This is my bike before the wreck and after. If it’s not the OEM lightbar please let me know, maybe I can dig up the right parts somewhere

ACEMUSTANG2002 Not sure why my links didn't work in my post above? But looking at your pics, it does appear that you have the OEM light bar. From those pics it looks like the lamp bucket might have gotten broken off but the bar is intact?

My comment about the bucket being too shallow was for the Cobra light kit. There is a non-active member here that lives near me. I noticed that the Cobra cans on his light bar weren't as deep as my Yamaha ones. So if you were to buy the Cobra kit (unless they've changed it) I wouldn't be surprised that the LED lights you have don't fit.

I know on mine the LED lights would hit the switch on the side of the housing. Also many of the newer OEM lights were 4.7" and you'd have to find a way to wrap the LEDs or do something to take up the slack or they won't fit tight. These are the ones where the screw to hold the trim ring runs up vertically from the bottom. If you have the rings that are a clamp style with a horizontal screw those I believe are 4.5" and will work with the LED assembly.

Brad_G Thanks for the info! The bolt that goes through the bucket to the turn signal sheered in the accident. I do have replacement bulbs that I believe arrived today. I’m watching a new bucket and some bulbs on eBay right now, but I’m not sure how to tell the difference from sealed beam to halogen without the part number

STR-4NK35-50-00 Replacement Passing Lamp Bulb - Sealed Beam Type ALL

STR-4NK35-50-01 Replacement Passing Lamp Bulb – Halogen (H3) ALL

What actually broke on the oem setup just the hollow allen bolt? And the bent flange on bar?

I believe the buckets are ok. The bezels took a beating, one has some serious road rash. The bar itself looks to be ok. I lost one Allen bolt and the lenses

I don't think there is really and difference from the can aspect. It's either a PAR36 bulb (common on tractors) with two screw terminals on the back or the H3 which is very common in aftermarket fog lamps and such. So it's more which bulb directly connects to your wiring in the bucket.

When you say you have LEDs for your passing lamps I'm assuming it's the entire assembly with the heat sink, like this. Click image for larger version

If you have LEDs like the above those are the ones that can be difficult to install and get to stay in place. There is a lot of talk on the facebook groups about buying Harley style cans to put the LEDs in. But for the Yamaha guys they pull the bolt from the OEM can and use it in the new buckets. This allows the adapter to be used to mount the OEM turn signals. Here is a link that gets shared about the mounting of aftermarket cans. https://www.jrbk.net/4-5-light-buckets-htm/

You are correct i do have the entire assembly with the heat sinks. That is a great idea thank you! I will look into that!

The cobra cans are shallow. Definitely won’t fit the led stuff. Can’t say whether the stock or Harley cans will fit. I went off the deep end. Only remaining oem light bar stuff I could find were the sealed beam bulbs to offer.

there are two holes in the bar at each end. one for the turn signal and the other for the can. i only used one of them

I have the Cobra light bar which is very good quality. I ended up wanting LED lights so I bought some Harley buckets off Amazon for $40 and got LED lights that would fit and put them in there. Work out great

I too agree this is the right approach to upgrading to LED. I've seen guys talk about wrapping in electrical tape or foam weatherstripping. But eventually that's going to give and the light will become loose. Do it right the first time and just enjoy the ride without the worry of shit falling off/rattling/etc.
