  • Replace a 1600 whole front end witha 1700?

    A bud has a 2003 Road Star 1600 Silverado. He wants the entire chrome front end from a 2006 Silverado 1700 I am parting out.

    Our plan is to disassemble his bike down to the level illustrated in the picture and replace everything from my old 1700. Fork tubes, complete front wheel assembly, calipers, rotors, handlebars, perches, levers, switches, front brake controls, Hydraulic lines, electrical stuff, headlight, passing lamps ----- everything one would remove to get a Roadie disassembled down to what is in the picture.

    The picture is not a Road Star but used to illustrate what we are attempting to accomplish.

    Will the electrical switches and controls swap out between his 1600 and the 1700? What do we need to know about exchanging everything from a 16 to a 17?

    This may illustrate what we are trying to do better.

    We want to take a 1600 apart to this level and replace everything from a 1700 and need to know what surprises are involved other than the disassembly and re-assembly?

      electrical have different connectors, the Molex is different. Between 1600 and 1700. So electrical would not be plug and play coming into the headlight bucket

        Can the guts out of 1600 brushed aluminum housings by each hand grip be removed and put in the chrome 1700 housings?

          I would assume they would be the same however I don't know for sure. I know the Molex connectors are the opposite, IE if female terminated on 1600 then they are male terminated on 1700.

            I'm guessing from the wiring diagrams that the color coding is the same. But between my '03 1600 and '08 1700 the connectors are slightly different on the rear fender. So I wouldn't be surprised if the headlight bucket may not match up as Lug Nut suggests. I'd take a look at both bikes before you get too far in to see what you're up against. I'd wonder if you could take a terminal pin release tool and just swap the connectors as needed. I'd think that might be less work than swapping switch internals at the bar.

              De-pining is a PITA been there done that

                If the only difference is connectors in the headlight I would just cut them and use WAGO 221 lever nuts. They are small, secure, and reusable.
