  • How to not strap down a bike

This is for sale on FB marketplace. https://www.facebook.com/groups/1003...69806623067442

It hurts to see how it’s tied down. Enough that I probably wouldn’t buy it.

Reminds me of the damage when Lance’s bike was towed in Oregon.

Ouch! I think you meant Lance's bike when we were in Spray Oregon.

I don’t know if anything was ruined. But the straps are on the bars and that’s all that’s holding the bike down and upright. To keep it from falling over or moving as the suspension travels the straps would have to be pulling down really hard. That’s a lot of pressure on the bars and it’s holding the suspension under compression. Good way to damage stuff.

The tow truck driver strapped Lance’s bike like this. It blew out the front shocks, the engine guard hit the front fender, bent the handle bars, and messed up the neck bearings.

Proper way is for the front wheel to be in a chock and the wheels strapped down so the bike ride on its suspension.

Thanks. I have never strapped down a bike in all my years.

Front straps should be attached to the triple tree or upper forks and not the handlebars which can move. Front wheel should be in a chock. Rear should be tied down with straps attached to the frame.

Strapping down a bike can stir up things almost like an oil thread. Most of the time I use my buddies enclosed trailer. I store it for him at my place in exchange for using when I want. Hell of a deal for me. When I've trailered mine I use a wheel chock on the front wheel. Since he has an Indian, he'll buy anything that specifically states it's compatible with Indian.

I liked this chock enough I bought my own (found some used ones on Craigslist) as it drops the back so you don't have to bounce the bike over the swivel to get it out.

His trailer has E-tracks on the floor. I run two straps from the passenger board mounts and pull the bike forward and down. It doesn't compress the front shocks like tying it from up high on the bars/triple tree. It rides very securely and has worked for well for me for several thousand miles.

I have hauled a bike from Florida to Texas, and two from California to Arizona tied down to the handlebars just like the bike in the O.P. Plus numerous ones in-state. I used to flip two or three bikes a year back when I was healthy. If that's all you got, you don't have much choice. Never had one fall over, or out, or hurt the suspension or neck bearings. Never could afford all that fancy shit.

I use this method. The bike is free to bounce on its suspension.
one issue with attaching to the upper part, above the suspension, is that you either have to compress the suspension to the point it doesn't get to move, or the straps loosen and re-tighten as the bike bounces.

I didn't buy his straps, I just use ratchet straps.

ive been doing it on the lower forks, not compressing the bike. into a chock. and frame at rear , 45 degree strapping. people ASSume the bike will stand up strate. but if allowed,by inadequate straps, wheels can slip to the side and bike will lay down sideways. had a guy fudge up his tank on trailer fence this month on FButt. IMHO, the chock should hold bike by itself, NOT allowing the Hbars to turn AT ALL, and once in the cradle, take effort to come out of chock, straps are just for stabilization and restraint. those little welded pipe chocks ??? not for me

POS anything will give you problems, hard for some to learn.

Same happened to me last year when i needed a tow. The driver started to strap it down from the handle bars and i stopped him and said "Obviously you don't ride a Motorcycle" He agreed and i corrected him on tie down proceedure and ended up doing it myself.

I strap them from the lower triple tree and somewhere along the rear of the frame or through the rear wheel. I also like to use a big block of wood that fits under the frame nicely as to not compress the suspension and preventing the bike to bounce around.

                          Now the big question!!

Are you guys using Synthetic straps or semi synthetic? I also like High octane straps over the lower ones!

I take an old motorhome camping a lot to bicycle trails to ride my E-bike ( 20MPH pedal assist ). I have a dozen bikes but since I got the E-bike the rest are collecting dust. I work remotely so I work during the day and explore on my bicycle at night. The one problem is not having a vehicle other than the m-home to run errands unless my wife comes and brings the car which is rare. I discovered the Uhaul motorcycle trailer recently and I am thinking I should have my R with me on these trips. I almost bought a nice trailer and a good chock once, then when I checked again the trailer went up a grand...I look when I see bikes on trailers and in pick ups. Most are standing up but I saw one one the kickstand tied down?

That's cool that you can work remote in a secluded place like that. A few weeks ago we went on a camping trip to Lake Red Rock (just outside Pella IA) and this time I took the bike. My 5th wheel camper has a 2" receiver on it so I hooked up a small trailer to the back with the bike. It was great having it there to bop around on when we'd need something from town. More fun than driving the truck for things.
