  • My fuel pump is crapping out

Hey y’all, so I’m in Georgia staying with a friend right now, the trip’s been going freakin awesome and I’m having the time of my life!!!

However my fuel pump seems to be on its way out. I’m not sure what’s wrong with it but yesterday evening I was on the highway and the bike lost all power and started to rev down as if it was running out of gas, I put the reserve on and same thing, still revved down until it died.

I turned the key off, made sure the kill switch wasn’t on, turned the key back on and heard no clicks at all from the fuel pump. Weird right?

So I literally just tapped on the side of it and was like wtf, then turned the key on again and this time the fuel pump clicks just like it’s supposed to. Bike fires right up and has no more issues the rest of the evening.

now today I did about 250 miles and didn’t have any issues until I got to the place I’m staying at, I was on the way to the grocery store and the bike suddenly started revving down again just like it did yesterday.

I’m gonna order a new fuel pump tomorrow, my question is should I go with OEM for that or are the Caltric fuel pumps good? I saw they’re only $20 on eBay whereas the OEM pumps are $100+ so not sure what I should go with

any suggestions would be greatly appreciated y’all! and if any of you live in the Blue Ridge mountains let me know I would love to stop by and shoot the shit!

a foot or so of fuel line is much cheaper than a pump.

edit: cant comment on how it will behave on anything other that relatively flat terrain throughout most of texas that i have travelled.

edit: im assumed you have a carbonated bike also.

Don’t you need to install a Grizzly float valve to run pumpless? I know the bike can run without the pump but I don’t want to mess up the mixture, it runs perfect with the pump

Some folks have reported their bike running just fine without the grizzly after going pumpless.

My fuel pump died in the garage on my 2000. I tried to just use some fuel line and the bike would not even start and run lol. I don't see how people say that they can go just fine by doing only removing the fuel pump. I've done pumpless on multiple bikes but I do every step. 3 mm needle valve, vent the cap, remove the rollover valve, clean the petcock screens real good and cut down the petcock tube by 3/4 of an inch, use 5/16 fuel injection hose with an inline filter from Petco directly to carburetor. Remove the inlet screen filter from the carburetor. Make sure the float level is 5 mm above the seam. I vent the PCV from the cylinder head straight down to under the bike while doing all the other work.

How do you vent the cap? I've seen this mentioned before, but never seen how it was done.

carrying the fuel line , and bypassing the pump, from cock to carb will get u home, but, may not supply enuf fuel for hi demand riding.

On my bike it wouldn't even do that. I couldn't get it to start and run to even get down the driveway.

Definitely get an OEM pump. The $500 Road Star I just bought had a aftermarket caltric fuel pump and it buzzes and makes noise and obviously is going to stop working very quickly

This is the part that craps out on our fuel pumps.

So I can order that kit and just rebuild the pump that I have? I’d rather not spend $100 on a new fuel pump if I can just rebuild this one!

And yeah I’d rather not run pumpless, it seems like a lot of work to get it right and like I said my bike runs perfect with the pump at any elevation.

It’s just a single screw on the cover that comes out and then the cover just slips off.

I just checked mine and the points look clean as a whistle! No corrosion at all.. however I noticed my fuel filter is really dirty so I just ordered some new ones, they should get here in just a few days!

thanks I'll check it out, so thats what shuts it off once a certain pressure is reached

i believe rust in the tank can muck up the pump side of pump. ???? wonder why gravity woud=nt work? cant rout OVER the intake manifold, has to go under??? and put it on reserve??? if u buy a used pump, u run the risk of it being marginal, AM pumps are a gamble, but 20 $ el cheapos will get u home too. id go OEM, and that is the general concensus at the real RSC.

you should blow out the fuel lines, carefully, i think i put too much PSI in one, and damged the rubbers in the pump>>>>>?????

I mean... I'd just spend the 100 bucks and be thankful it's not 300.

There's some peace of mind in OEM.

If you dont expect to have the bike too much longer then it may not be worth it.

Well I don’t want to jump to conclusions and spend $100+ on a part that I don’t necessarily need, especially now that I’m a drifter and don’t have a consistent source of income, I really need to pinch my pennies haha

I’ve decided I’m gonna run a line with a fuel filter directly from the petcock to the carb while leaving the fuel pump in place but disconnected and test it to see if the bike will start that way, if it does I’ll take it out for a 50 mile ride and see how it runs. If it runs good I’m golden

Does anyone know what size the screws are that hold the gas cap together? One of mine fell out and I thought it was in the tank so I drained the tank and removed it, shook it around and there’s no sign of the screw being in there so I need to buy a replacement

I had the screw come out once and it was wedged into the seam at the bottom. I used one of those three prong grabber thing to fish it out.

are those stainless screws at the hardware store fuel compatible?

one point not oft mentioned with the pump, when u run dry, either from main to reserve, or forget to put cock ON, there is an INSTART START when u flip your cock. as I often do, i ride a RS daily all year long. it happens all the time.

Well y’all I learned my lesson the hard way haha. I did the Cherohala Skyway and the Tail of the Dragon yesterday and the bike ran great up until I got on I-40, around 7:30 yesterday evening the fuel pump shut off and this time it wouldn’t come back on at all. I tried to make the bike run without the pump and I got it to start for a few seconds but it died as soon as I gave it throttle and wouldn’t start back up. So there I am stranded on the side of I-40 with semis flying past me at 80+ mph and then I got a terrible case of the hiccups haha. Luckily my Bunk-a-Biker friend Mike has a trailer so he drove 2 hours out to pick up the bike and I and now I’m staying with him waiting for a new OEM fuel pump to come in, should be here in about a week.

mad thanks to my homie Mike he freakin saved my ass y’all!!!!! I would’ve been sleeping on the side of the interstate next to the bike if not for him haha
