  • Passing light switch

I bought a switch on ebay that is supposed to replace the one I have that no longer works. 2 of the connectors are correct but the other that has a square connector with a red wire and say yellow strip is different than the black wire, which I think is a ground and has no connector. Do I cut the other connector off and wire nut it to the black wire?

Ugh trying to remember how that was on mine. I removed the switch altogether and wired it to the headlight. Now all my lights come on when I turn the key. Prefer it that way as I like to be seen. If I’m remembering correctly I think I had a wire that grounded to the light can itself. Sorry guess I’m not being of any real help here.

All the lights come on with the key on mine too. A few years ago when I got my bike inspected in PA the driving lights had to go out when the high beam was on. I think that was a stupid thing. But in the ladt year or so PA was allowing for all the lights to be on at the same time. I want the switch to work again but also want the high and driving lights to be on when needed.

So the toggle switch is just a single pole single throw switch? Do you own a multimeter?

Are those connections made at the switch mounted in the passing light?

Mr. Miyagi, I think Morts instructions are the bucket connection.

I have the larger 4.7" passing lamps (found this when trying to put LED passing lamps in. In mine, the ground wire is attached to the inside of the passing lamp bucket. My switch has power coming in from the headlight bucket. Then it goes out in two wires to the left passing lamp in the same housing and the other wire travels through the mounting bar to the right passing lamp bucket. So my switch has 3 wires, all for power in and power out, no ground.

Here's the connectors in the package. The square one is the one I am not sure if I should cut and wire nut to the black(ground). ?

Take an OHM meter and check the switch. My guess (if it's like mine) is two wires are tied together to go out to each lamp. The other wire is the power in. If you tie it to your ground you're creating a direct short and will blow a fuse (best case) or melt wires (worst case). Don't use wire nuts, get a regular crimp connector for a more secure connection.

It was asked by mr miyagi… do you have a voltmeter…??
the passing lights are either ON or OFF… unless you want to get fancy… the switch would therefore either be ON or OFF…

if it has three wires than it is a single pole double throw switch…. Two wires connected in position #1… the common wire and one of the pole wires…. Flip the switch and the common wire is connected to the other pole wire…. It aint rocket science….

if you do not own a voltmeter…. Go buy one… 20 bucks and you can easily identify the switch terminals… added bonus…. You can use the voltmeter to check fuses, check battery voltage, check charging systems… etc… you would be amazed on how many uses a voltmeter will provide…. ‘YouTube’ is a wonderful source of information on how to use a voltmeter….

the tools to learn are at your disposal… all it requires is a desire to utilize the aforementioned aids to knowledge….
