Restrict the exhaust/open up the breathing……

I put another 100 miles on the R* today and have a desire to make a couple changes. I must say that it is very well dialed-in. It fires effortlessly, comes off choke quickly, pulls strong at any rpm or throttle position, and delivers endless grins.

But……It is silly loud, and part of me suspects there is power to regained by creating some back-pressure in the exhaust end. I also want to ditch the overly-large intake dome and think a vintage S&S unit might really fit. My only concern is upsetting the balance, but how about we all just agree they balance each other out and no fettling of the carb will be required. Agreed?

Yes you'll need to reject. If you go with an open element air cleaner it will improve performance but you will need to rejet and we can help you with that exactly. Do you know if you have baffles in your exhaust?

SS Cycle used to have the S&S style breather that fits your stock carb. I just checked their site though, and I couldn't find it. They have one that mimics the H-D Bell breather. There's one called the Velociraptor I thought was kinda cool,

round open element breathers are hard to find right now. The cheapest option is the K and N ra0677

I've owned 3 R\S's (I'm riding a Strat now and have a R/S Warrior for shits & giggles these days) and I put an S&S teardrop on the '00 HotRod. Took a little clearance work with a Dremel, but worked out real nice.
Baffles in your pipes will definitely fatten-up the midrange of your motor. Open pipes are "top-end" pipes. These motors are major grunt motors. They really don't turn enough RPMs to take advantage of open exhaust.
As LugNut stated, you'll need to fatten-up the jetting to compensate for the increase in air moving thru the combustion chambers.
While you've got the carb off, take the time to mildly port the intake manifold. Don't get carried away with it...radius the hard corners in the middle, and open it up at the ends that bolt to the heads. The mid-range will be so fat, you will be amazed ! Be sure to have new O-rings for the re-install.
