  • Tach side of coil

I've been working on installing an Audiovox CCS100 electronic cruise control on my '08. I've got my mount location down and built my bracket for the throttle pull. I'm down to running all the wiring. This cruise unit can be set to use the tach output to control speed and not need a secondary input from a magnet off something like the pulley etc.

One set of instructions I found said to connect off the negative side of the coil. Is there an easy way to figure out which it is. I couldn't see any markings on the coil itself. It seems that the coil mounts are reversed on each side. So if the negative is away from the frame on the left coil it would also be away from the frame on the right. On my bike the left coil (as your setting on the bike) has the electrical connections towards the neck of the bike and the plug wires coming off the back to the spark plugs. I presume that's the way all of them mount.

So any assistance in figuring out which connector I need to link to would be appreciated. Hoping to work on this early next week and get it all back together. Looks like riding weather may just get here soon.

    Thanks!

If no marks check with a test light or volt meter. Key on, attach the neg ide of your tester to the battery neg and check to see what wire is Positive on the coil. The opposite wire is Neg. I don't remember the color of the wires to the coil But usually a color wire is pos and neg is green or black.

Thanks davej I'll take a look at it closer. My instructions I was going off of said the negative side would show less voltage. But the voltage measured the same across both connections. They were however attached to the coil at the time. Do I need to unplug the leads and test them while disconnected?

According to schematic…. Click image for larger version

which would mean the ecm is grounding the coil and causing spark… the coils share a hot which is a “R/B” color and the ecm is connected via an “O” on one coil and a “Gy2” wire on the other coil…
and no, i didnt look up the color chart… assumed a red/ black stripe for the hot side

Apparently… that is the 1600 schematic posted prior…

          this is the 1700 schematic
          wire colors….
B/r black red……..hot from engine stop switch
          B/o black orange….gnd through ecm
          B/w black white…...gnd through ecm

Brad your ground should be a common color throughout the harness. Other items like horns and switches should have the same common color ground. Yours being FI Im just not sure what color it is.

Hotrod….. you might want to reference an electrical schematic…. The coils are triggered by the ECM…. A hot is supplied constantly to the coils from the engine kill switch (right hand grip)…. The ECM provides the ground for the coils in sequence of the engine rotation…. His question involved triggering the tachometer for RPM display…

the tachometer instructions specified to use the coil on the “ground side”…. Hence… the wire colors from the service manual schematic for a 1700 roadstar…. It would not matter if it is fuel injected or not regarding the coil wiring….

If he just uses a ground from the bike…. It would be impossible to trigger a tachometer… solid ground signal instead of the coil pulsing signal….

Thanks for all the help on this. I was able to pull back the wiring protector enough that I could see the inner connection (nearest frame) was an orange wire. Added the cruise wiring to that terminal. Got everything installed and almost ready for a test ride. Looking forward to having this done and bike back on the road.

DEEPHATE, hopefully I can. I've taken some pictures and have many mental notes I want to get down in writing. When I do I'll share in case anyone else is thinking about something like this.
