  • Random turn signal function

Good morning and wishing everyone a Happy Easter! I have been away from the forum for a bit and actually away from my 2004 r* for a bit longer than a year. Health issues forced a layoff but things may be moving in the right direction finally! My issue is one that is lingering. When riding with my son, he shared that my turn signals would start blinking randomly. I became obsessed with trying to witness it myself which became distracting when riding. I did ask about tis in the past but this issue concerns me. I vision me driving along and my blinker comes on prompting a vehicle to pull out thinking I am turning. I am not good at electrical gremlins but will be meeting with a friend who does have experience. I want to give him some insight into the issue and I know the wealth of knowledge from this forum is the way. Again, thanks in advance and I wish everyone a safe riding season.

Just throwing out a guess but it sounds like a turn signal switch with dirty contacts.

The switch does seem a bit sticky. I believe I have some electric contact cleaner. I'll give it a try. I worry about a ground issue. I appreciate your quick response.

Happy Easter! Sounds like that might be a swicth issue or maybe a turn signal relay malfuction, Do both front and rear flash?

Is this a stock setup or are there any aftermarket electronics to change the bikes behavior. Like the triple whammy or whatever the Kury product was.

Stock. don't know what the triple whammy refers to. Sounds fun though!!

Triple Whammy was made by Kuryakyn and was a plug and play or a hardwired module that made your single filament turn lights become stop, turn, run lights.

Shores said perfectly what the triple whammy was. Devices like this can cause some strange gremlins as well. So just wanted to make sure there wasn't anything else in play. I would concur with the cleaning of the switch first. I presume there are springs internally that return the button to center. Maybe a week or broken spring allowing the switch to move slightly and engage when hitting a bump?

Can the switch assembly be serviced with relative ease?

Yes but pay attention to how the couple parts inside are put together. My reasoning is that you have to have voltage sent to the turn signal relay in order for it to blink. I think (but not sure) that power is switched at the turn switch and not switching ground. Even if ground is switched to activate the signals it would be in the turn switch.

Thanks davej. Sounds a bit complex for me to be brutally honest. I will try cleaning with electric contact cleaner and move from there. I wish I had the knowledge and tools you guys have as well as the confidence to rip into things! As always, I appreciate any and all the support from this forum!!

Yes, no more complicated than taking apart a toaster.

New electronic toaster, or the old fashion type Steve? LOL.

Its funny you say this. This weekend I was riding down the highway and noticed my right turn signal was flashing. I pushed the button and it went off. Never saw it happen again. I kept questioning myself. "Did I accidentally hit the switch?, Na couldn't have.... Well Maybe?"
