  • My clutch cable adjustments

The Road Star that I have is my first ever bike. I've had it since May of last year. Only one previous owner and only 20k miles on it when I got her. Since getting her I've had to put a new clutch in and some new stuff in the transfer case. Since this is my first bike and I haven't ridden anything else to compare, you might see me a lot here on the forums with many questions. Hope you don't get too tired of seeing me here lol.

A week or so ago the clutch cable finally gave up and I replaced it with an OEM cable. I've researched numerous videos on how to PROPERLY adjust a clutch cable. I've been dinking with mine since i installed it and have a few questions on options and what you all think.

Where I have it adjusted to now the bike will engage about mid open on the handle. This is the most comfortable for me as I can control the bike more easily on low speed and around parking lots etc. However in order for me to have it comfortable there is some slack in the handle. About 2-3 nickels width which is more than everything I've seen out there. If I take in the slack on the handle either by the handle adjustment or the adjustment midway through the cable, then the bike doesn't engage until the handle is let out just short of all the way. To me this makes it less comfortable and less controllable. I've gone back and forth adjusting the midway point and the handle adjustment and can't seem to get that slack gone while still engaging the bike midway through the handle pull.

Question one: What might I be missing on adjusting it so I can have the comfort and control I want without the slack?

Question two: If I leave it as is will it hurt the bike or will it be fine and I just have to deal with a loose handle when fully open?

Question three: How do you all have it set and is the bike engaging at the end of opening the handle the norm for the road stars?

Thanks everyone and I'm sure I'll see you on the next questions I have about the carburetor and stator. lol

Don’t adjust for comfort. Adjust for performance. One nickel thickness between lever and perch when the engine is warmed up. Change oil every 3k miles or so. What “stuff” did you put in the transfer case? Marshmallows?

What tends to happen with that much slack at the lever is, when you get the bike good and hot, you don’t have enough travel to fully release the clutch pack. Unfortunately for you, there is no way around this, and the shop manual spec is the adjustment that is guaranteed to work. This is a thick clutch pack. It requires a healthy release travel to get everything seperated and released. Hope you lubed the cable good. Any paperwork that says your new cable never needs lube is for selling more cables.

Honestly, I have used Break Free CLP gun lube on my cables for decades and it has always worked fantastic. I use Lubriplate 130AA on the pivot points and the swaged terminal ends so they don’t bind. I lubricate annually, and ALWAYS inspect the exposed cable and ends when I am lubing them so I don’t have issues. Remember this as well, if a cable adjustment has been perfectly fine for a long time, and all of a sudden you have to adjust it twice in 500 miles, something is up, and it is normally an indication that you have an impending failure.
