How many miles were on the bike if you don't mind me asking? Mine's a '99 and just passed 24k a few days ago, runs perfect just like yours did but I'm scared of something like this happening to it, gonna be checking/replacing my oil pump gear this spring for sure! Might even break open the case and make sure that nut is tight because this thread made me paranoid..

Mines an 01 with about 46k…..again was running perfect no issues no noises at all…..I had never opened that case before just made sure fluid was good…

Engine oil pump gear had nothing to do with OP’s transfer case taking a dump.

yea still on the green side, I stop in most every day and see what's happening, Still have my R* but haven't ridden much. I'm gettin up in years and don't want to risk a visit to the medical establishments. Here in TN they are slammed with virus patients and don't need me..LOL

What about hard downshifting engine breaking, did you do that a lot

I downshift all the time, slowing down, headed into corners……but never had any issues with any other bikes I’ve owned….

guess i should have joined the zoom thing. late last year, i brainfarted and downshifted one too many and let the clutch out too fast. left two skid marks that day. definitely got the engine brake action. speed was below 30mph but more than 15 as i was slowing for a turn. besides losing a bit of life on the belt, do i need to be concerned about warpage on the pulley shaft, chain integrity or anything else? I've probably put on 2000 miles since.

Doubtfull ....ive beat the hell put of 6 different 1600 road stars ive owned and never broke a part

No I mean like really hard down shifting where you use the engine aggressively to lower the vehicle speed. To me i I would say that that would be the place that takes the most abuse with really aggressive engine braking, besides the belt and pulleys, but they flex.

Now there is something I haven't seen before. Glad you were able to get stopped with out incident. How close from home were you? Nothing like being broke down on Hwy 101 early in the am.

About 3 miles…..luckily not far and luckily it wasn’t the next day while riding to Reno in a group of 15 riders too…..

Not really…..looking at my options…..been talking with Duke…..looked at a few other bikes and then just using mine as a donor or take my time a build it…..looking at some donor complete motors…..not sure which way I’m going yet…..the way I’m leaning is working with Duke on a motor trans and transfer case and doing a big bore kit…..I’m either spending my money on a new bike or I’m spending about the same money on MY bike with a big bore kit……I’m liking that option more and more….I Love my bike and it not being around kinda bothers me…….of course I could be being stupid but that’s the way I’m leaning……..

Not sure if the motor case is cracked as I haven’t been able to to see it all……..transfer case definitely is and transmission shaft is sheered and not sure if there is any added damage along that shaft….either way motor will need pulled and split to check that all out…..and with my pending move because of my job and not sure exactly where I will be living it’s just sitting on my lift table until I have time and have gotten settled over in the Redmond area……if I can find a place to live over there…..lol…..stress level is off the charts at the moment so motorcycle is unfortunately not at the top of the list……

I can understand that. I'd be pulling the transfer case out first and I'm willing to bet there is no damage to the engine case. pretty sure you can pull the transfer without pulling the engine. You could also eliminate the transfer case and run chain to the right side and relocate the brake. Just have to put a oil can on the bike like a Hardley. Not simple, but eliminate a lot of weight and power loss from the transfer case. Seen a few done up that way on custom builds. I also read an article on swapping in I think it was a Raider or Stratoliner into a Roadstar frame. Good luck with the move and such, I'm sure it's going to be a real bitch to keep 2 households but understand the situation. Let me know if I can help in any way.
