  • Progressive rear spring

My 05 Roadie is bottoming out pretty bad. I was thinking of putting in a new Progressive spring and leaving the OEM shock. Has anyone else done this? I'm wondering if it may be an economical way of improving the situation

many have done it and it works fine but most of us have install a Roadwing shock. A Roadwing shock is a Honda Goldwing gl1800 shock modified to fit our bikes.

Do you have the adjustment on your stock shock adjusted all the way stiff?

Yes I have it tightened all the way, doesn't seem to help much at all at this point. I don't even know if the shock is part of the problem. From what I've researched and read on this forum, the spring seems to be the weakest link

From that I understand, the stock shock is one of the major problems because it allows the spring to Pogo. Putting a stronger progressive spring on a stock shock may result in the same problem. I would not change the spring without also changing the shock, that's why most of us went with a roadway which is a goldwing shock and spring.

If he tightens his preload all the way and I still bottoms out, doesn't that mean that his spring is shot?

I’m not an expert, but I would think that springs don’t weaken over time, but shocks do wear out. If max preload still bottoms out then it’s because of a bad shock, lowered suspension, increased rider/passenger weight or a combination of all three. We need a spring and shock adequate for the load and the OEM appears to be a little under rated for a lot of riders.

Springs are designed to compress and rebound. While springs can weaken it's generally not a huge problem. The shock's job is to dampen and slow the travel during that compression and rebound. So they really need to work in tandem. A spring strong enough to prevent bottoming out with a bad shock would be a harsh ride.

Similar to why people change up front shock springs and oil weight. It's all about getting the proper balance (spring resistance and dampening) with your load.

I've been told same thing the spring holds up the bike it takes the hit, the shock prevents the bike from continually bouncing until the energy is gone. So a shot shock will bounce up and down after it hits a bump. And all springs fatigue over time.
