  • LED Taillight Upgrade

    I recently changed my 03 Midnight tail light to LED. What big difference!

    I did the same thing 15 years ago. I just this year replaced it because a couple LEDs burned out.

      If I may ask.......Where did you get the LED light and is it a simple replacement without upgrades.......

        Not for the taillight. I did put LED bulbs in my turn signals and they now flash faster but I don't mind so I didn't fix it.

        I got a similar unit that has the turn signals built in and they flash pretty quick...

      Ok great. I went LED all around and the taillight was the only light I had issues with. I just replaced the bulb and it wouldn't stop flashing on me for some reason. So I went back to original bulb. I might have to upgrade to this set up. Thanks!

        Yeah I do have a brake flashing kit but it only flashes when u apply the brake.

        Also it flashed as soon as I turned the bike on and wouldn't stop.

        I wonder if it used load sensing to flash? IF it's simple plug and play, you could bypass it and put it back to stock and try the LED taillight again. I bet it's the flasher unit and the LED not playing well together. Then you have to decide which you'd rather have.

        The Stop light circuit is separate from the turn signal circuit.
        This applies for motorcycles and cars, unless you have a integrated combination stop light with turn signals.
        Motorcycles and cars that originally used standard incandescent turn signal bulbs, have a turn signal flasher that is set up to be used with incandescent bulbs. Incandescent bulbs have a different resistance/inductance than LED's.
        Old school knowledge is that if your incandescent turn signals flash fast, you have a bulb that is burnt out because the resistant/inductive load changed.
        Since LED's have a low resistance and no inductance, our flashers flash fast, because the flasher thinks it has a burnt out bulb.

        One cure is to add load resistors
        or replace flasher unit with a electronic flasher, but you loose your auto cancel that is on our bikes
        or you can modify the orginal flasher unit, by adding a resistor to a spot in the flasher.
        I did the last option.
        I found a how to on line, took it a little further by cutting the case and adding the resistor. I then repaired the case and installed.
