  • Heel/Toe shifter

Well. Last time that is going to happen. Leaving gas station 5am, put bike in first gear, roll to the driveway and start to put my feet down but its clear so put feet back up and lean into my turn and accelerate only to find I’m in neutral again. Almost dropped the bike. The toe and heel piece is only about a size 11 apart and I wear a size 12 boot, so when I put my feet up I bump the heel shifter. So I just finished cutting the heel part off. Rounded it off and polished it. Looks nice. Now I can’t wait to go for a ride and have that not happen. End of rant.

On my 2008, it is removable. I traded it for a 33 tooth front pulley.

I never cut one off except for my buddies, I bought the very rare OEM custom one for all three oh, four road Stars. Worse than that is when your shoelaces get hooked on it when you try to put your foot down and then you take a spill

I have had that happen, I never double tie my laces any more so that maybe I can pull the loop out when it happens.

When I was looking at bikes the local dealer had a 2000 Road Star. At the time I was just kicking the tires and sitting on them to get a feel for what I thought I wanted. That was something I noticed that with heavy boots on there isn't much room between the front and back of the shifter. I like that my '08 has the spoon on the rear. Gives me more room to move my foot around on the floorboard.

The first thing I did when I got mine was take off the heel/toe shifter. I extended the floorboards and put an extra long toe shifter on it. I've been a toe shift only guy for almost 50 years. I'm an old dog with big feet and I'm not looking for any new tricks to learn..

I love the heel / toe set-up, but the same thing happened to me a few times. Fortunately, I have the late model 2 piece shifter and just removed the rear one.

I was hoping that cutting off the heel portion wouldn’t make an un-balanced condition and cause it to want to down shift when i hit a bump

I don't know I just figured if I cut it off and left a bare metal it would rust like no tomorrow just like everything else rusts here in Florida. The custom one has like a chrome barrel that's about an inch and a half inch and a quarter in diameter, the part that touches your toe. I guess when I cut my buddies off for him I didn't like the way it looked either, but I wouldn't give a crap today

They seam to be made of polished stainless. I cut it off, ground then polished down to 400 grit and it looks factory. I'll have to try a picture.

I didn’t think I would like the heel part until I tried it. Now I wouldn’t use anything else. Love it.

I've cut the heel part off of a couple of bikes, polished smooth, then used a bright silver paint to cover the exsposed medal.
The last bike I've done was cut the front toe shifter off, and used the rear heel part as the toe shifter by *twisting the lever 180 degrees. That will make the shifter a little longer, exposing more floorboard for you feet.
                    Worked for me.

I like the sound of that, Did you have to heat it to twist it 180?

No twist, I should've said rotate.

Oh, oh, I should have figured that out. Sorry, I might have to try that on one bike.

I never used to have a heel to toe shifter until the R*, but then wore tennis shoes while riding in the past.
Now I only wear steel toe leather lace shoes which are very comfortable after a friend and bike mechanic who's gone down his share of times enlightened me on your toes possibly being ground off in a spill ( he has his ). When I've gone on rally rides I pack a pair of tennis shoes for walking comfort. My size 10 1/2 shoe fits well in the board and it's easier to kick the heel shifter than slip the steel toe under the front .........Works for me

I sometimes find that the shoes/boots that I am wearing at the time, for some reason, don't seem to always give enough flexibility (or something) causing me to fail to upshift. In those cases, having the heel part of the shifter helps avoid embarrassing missed shifts. I don't remember if my 650 Classic had a heel/toe shifter or not, but age and injuries have conspired to make having only a toe shifter ( like my previous bikes) less feasible. I generally don't wear steel-toed boots, since , while standing topside watch on the submarines I was stationed on , having to wear steel-toes boondockers , the cold seemed to draw the heat out of my feet (weather in Scotland, for instance, is not very comfortable).. Other experiences with steel-toed boots have soured me on them...I actually had my toes cut by the steel toe, and in one instance, if a shipmate of mine had been wearing steel toed boondockers when a crane dropped a load and the load bounced on his foot before falling overboard, he would have LOST his toes, instead of just getting them severely bruised.
The heel/toe shifter is one of the things my Honda VTX1300 riding brother doesn't like about my bike, but I do like the versatility of the device. To each his/her own, I guess!

Another option is composite plastic toe boots. I love mine. They saved my toes the other day when a HD Clown crossed in front of me after slowing to the right like he was going to turn right.
