Anyone doing figure 8's in an 18' square with a Road Star?

  • Anyone doing figure 8's in an 18' square with a Road Star?

    For several seasons I have been practicing slow riding with the Road Star and trying to master a constant figure 8 in an 18 foot parking space. I see a lot of videos with the Harley Road King etc able to do this consistently. I can get about three full figure eights but trying to get 6 is difficult.

    My guess is the rake on the Road Star is affecting the turning radius whereas the Harley can turn tighter. Not to make excuses as my skill level requires more practice. I do not think the Road Star was designed to enter Police type riding events, as I have never seen a single Road Star in those types of events.

    The Road Star can rock a 19' figure eight as the extra foot makes a big difference. But the 18 foot and under is a bit more difficult.

    My goal was to take the advanced Police riding course in Toronto but going to scrub that idea as COVID and other factors are too weighty at this point in time.

    So, is anyone having success with the 18 foot figure 8? I have never seen a single video of a Road Star being used in a slow riding course yet.

    For a big bike the road Star is nimble and I find it very comfortable with the Big Ed seat. Going on season eight with the Road Star and perplexed why Yamaha stopped making them. Even my Harley buddies are a fan of the bike.

    i used ta practice in dirt, when i did, i would turn the idle up a bit. cant do that on a fuelie i guess? this way all ya gotta do is clutch, brake and steer. i purposely practiced , lock to lock with steering, but never measured. after a while ya get good. Cops get a beater bike to practice with, and thats an unfair advantage. I know the guy that does the 3 bike demo outside of Destination Daytona Harley Davidson, i bought his car/bike hauler from him. those guys can crawl slow as a bug, but some HD's have frame, rake, and turn radius for it. IVE been to demos, and I seen an outlaw ride on a HD, and then the cop rode the outlaw bike in the cones, that was cool. but most large jap cruisers can t do it. the forks are wider on HD's? i can do it on my trike tho! without a drift.

      Be sure to sit up straight and forward to control center of gravity.

        The R* has a longer wheelbase the the HD's also.

          +1, Roadstar WB - 66.5", Harley Street Glide WB - 64". Rake and trail also factor in turning radius.

          Yes. 26 degrees of rake, 6.7" of trail for 2019 Street Glide VS Road Star's 32 degrees of rake and 5.6" of trail.

        i have seen a interesting riders test on utube, i think its called the snowman, 3 circles, has anyone given this a try?

              im a lefty, and i find slow tight right circles are harder than going left

                What about grinding down the fork stops to give you a tighter radius? Have not actually looked at it just the thought popped in my head.

                  In most states doing anything to the fork stop will legally classify the bike as junk. Doesn't matter if it's in an accident or deliberate.

                  I can do lock to lock turns at super slow slow speed but I've never measured it.
                  A guess would be something like two average car parking lot spaces ... maybe.

                    There's an MSF course in my town and they have a really tight "S" turn painted on the ground, I go out and try it sometimes. As I'm sure you know, the R* is surprisingly capable at low speeds maneuvering; once you learn to trust the bike. And yes, turning up the idle helps quite a bit. I took my Voyager out there today for the first time and gave it a try. It could handle the S no problem, but then I noticed they added a circle, so I tried that too. That was a bit more challenging; mainly because the idle on the Voyager is too low. It's an FI bike, and you can electronically bump it from 900 to 950 to 1000 RPMs, but even at 1000 RPMs it's not enough. I'm sure I'll be back out there at some point for another go. I'm pretty confident the R* could handle it.
