  • I've gone over to the other side... Picked up a Kawasaki Voyager today.

I just picked up a [new to me] Voyager and I've got to say I'm really liking it. It's definitely a different beast compared the R*, especially in the way that it makes it's power; more of a twin turbo V6 compared to the R*s V8 like qualities. Which is odd, because it's also a 1700 V-twin. The biggest difference is it's liquid cooled with an overhead cam, so no rocker adjustments, or any other engine maintenance; only oil changes and the occasional coolant flush. Fortunately the PO just had both done at the dealer, along with a new front tire.

The biggest downside is it has a big flat spot in the mid range, where it vibrates a lot, if you roll on more than half throttle from low RPM. Fortunately it smooths out and picks up the power around 4000 RPMs and pulls all the way to it's 6500 RPM red-line. It doesn't do it if you whack the throttle from a standing start or drop a gear or two. Apparently there's an ECU flash that fixes that and improves performance.

It handles surprisingly well when you get on it and It's pretty smooth. I took a 150 mile ride today and it carved up the twisty mountain roads just fine. I still have my R*, and now that I managed to fix the handling issues, there are definitely a few things about it I prefer to the Voyager, it's better looking for one, but with nearly at 50k miles on the clock, and after 10 years of R*s, I'm ready to sell.

Here she is in all here glory:

I really like the look of the dash; it reminds me of an old muscle car.

Sweet bike Doc. A neighbour had one and he would ride it all the time in any condition. It always sat outside except winter. They are nice looking bikes and ready for touring in comfort for sure.

Looks great! Buddy of mine that I ride with sometimes has the Vaquero (same bike minus the tour pack). He did the Harley Enforcer swap as well. Great bike.

I do like the Vaquero, they're good looking bikes. I'd planned on getting one, but when I found this Voyager, it was just too good of a deal to pass up. There's a mod you can do to make the trunk removable; I'll probably do that along with a shorter windshield for sure. The stock one is too tall for my liking.

Looks good. Check out Ivans Performance. He has performance flashes that may interest you.

The stock seat is incredibly comfortable. I've got a backrest on my R* but I don't need one on the Voyager.

I paid $5,700 and it has 20k on the ODO. It was too good a deal to pass up; most used Voyagers go for around $7,500-$10,000, and usually with more miles.

      Nice looking ride.

Not sure I ever saw your findings on what was causing your handling issues on the R*.

Great looking ride Doc. I was looking at and seriously considering one of those last year, then a great deal came up on an Indian Roadmaster that I jumped on.

From test riding a few of them, I know you are going get lots of "Miles with smiles" on that ride. Enjoy

Thx Grubsie, I wouldn't have minded a Roadmaster but there beyond my budget.

I sold off everything last year except for my Royal Star Venture and then wound up totaling it late summer early fall, so I started looking at Voyagers when the Roadmaster came along. It was a hell of a price so I jumped on it. Without the $ from insurance for the RSV, I wouldn't have been able to buy it. Now I am starting to look at Nomads for a bang around bike. Wanted to get another RS but the asking prices are in the ozone. So a Nomad may be the next side adventure..... (I think).

Initially it was the steering head and swing arm bearings; the tow truck driver in Oregon damaged both by over tightening the tie down straps. I also had the Roadwing rebuilt and that helped too; it had over 40k miles on it. The bike handles great now up to 85 mph, above that, when I accelerate hard and let off the throttle, there's a momentary shimmy. I've narrowed it down to the new Harley touring slip-ons I added last year.

They're mounted underneath the saddlebag supports; unlike the Bassanis which had their own frame mounted support. There's enough play that the slip-ons can move side to side a couple inches. [see first video] Under hard acceleration the pipes flex a bit, especially the right side. [see second video] When I let off the gas they snap back and continue to swing for a moment. It's enough weight to make the rear end shimmy a little at high speeds until they settle back down. Touring bikes normally have a brace between the two saddle bag supports to tie both sides together and prevent this. I'll be adding a brace next week to take care of it.

Exhaust play when using softail saddlebag supports, and touring slip-ons, without a center brace:

Jump to the 20 second mark:

That's with both sides tied together using a center brace. Without a brace it's that much worse.

Very pretty bike, wondered where you had been hanging out Road test the new bike by riding it to the meet and greet in Baker City.

Thanks KC. If I'm honest I wasn't a big fan of the blue, it's a bit much, I really preferred the red and black, but the blue is starting to grow on me. That said, I may do a vinyl wrap at some point and make it red and black like I did to the batwing on my R*.

Thanks Mike but that's a bit too much desert for my liking. If I'm riding 12-13 hours to Oregon, I'm doing it for the lush green forests and twisty mountain roads. I've got desert a couple hours east of me if I ever feel the urge. [I haven't] Maybe next year.
