  • Hydraulic clutch?

    Has anyone done this on a Roadstar? Arthritis in my hand and wrist has the clutch pull effort bothering me from time to time. Yes, cable is lubed and fairly new.
    2000 Roadstar 1600 - BAK, Pumpless, Curt's manifold, Mikuni HSR42 Freedom Combat Pipes Jumbo Strong bags, PPG 'HellFire' Paint.

      Is your cable lubed? Is it fairly new? Lol...

      Time to look at a Royal Star (96-98), a RSV (99+) or a Liner....

      My Roadliner with a stronger spring is pretty easy to pull especially compared to my cable driven bikes...

        Years ago on the old RSC site there was a couple members did the auto clutch and it wasn't worth a shit. I don't remember the exact issues but I do remember they didn't like them or perform like advertised. I think one of the members even removed it and went back to stock. One of the old members (Hardonetoget) made a little pulley bracket that worked out real good and even looked good. It decreased the pull pressure by about 1/2 IIRC. I will see if i still have the pic of it and will post it if I can find it.

        Some years back, I don't remember who posted it but he used a small bearing to give his RS a lighter clutch pull.
        The cable wrapped around the V-bearing for a leverage advantage. There were pictures posted of his setup.
        Maybe someone knows or remembers who it was.
        I looked but could not find the write up.

          Try a mousetrap. Much easier conversion that hydraulic. There is a really nice video on Youtube (OLD HARLEY DAVIDSON MOUSETRAP) all about how to adjust one and you will see how easy it is to pull and hold your clutch lever with this ingenious device from years past.

            That's really cool! Lots of adjustment procedure but it looks way easier!

          Here is the pic of a clutch pull mod done by a member on the old RSC. The bracket is homemade and the bearing is a "U groove" bearing" I think there was enough adjustment on the middle cable adjuster to make the adjustment work.Click image for larger version

            Looks like he just drilled and tapped the stock lower bracket. I like it! is there enough extra cable in the standard OEM cable or do you have to figure that out and order custom clutch cable?

          Don't you have to pull the lever twice as far for that? or does it not increase travel?

            Yeah my guess is there is little room for error on cable adjustment. But it would make it easier for sure.

              I think the snatch block works because our clutch pull is way more than needed. If I remember that post correctly the disengage/engage range is less than half of the total pull. So the snatch block cuts effort by half, but doubles the travel. But since we have enough range it still worked. But yeah the tolerance was very tight.

                I might be asking about this post in a few years but for now pulling the clutch lever is the only exercise I get.

                After getting a 1600 trike I noticed that the levers on the 1600 are smaller and thinner in the area where your fingers attach and pull one of them is like a half inch the other ones like three quarters I swap the 1600s out and put 1700 levers on it. I'll see if I can post a picture tomorrow

                Like davej said, way back they were trying hydraulic clutches, solenoid driven shifting, and had “landing gear” (training wheels that went up and down based on speed) for Gold Wings. None of it lasted. The landing gear was made in Titusville, Fl. so I got to see a few. Had to shake my head. Timeframe was about the first year Destination Daytona opened up.

                    note, i did have to remove adjuster/ nut from brake side actuator bolt that gazinta the MC.

                      I could see comfort (especially if you have arthritis in your fingers) being better with the wider handle. But being the same length (unless the pivot point is different) it's not improving your leverage.

                    You all ought to ride my gen 1 Vmax with two stock clutch diaphragm springs in it... A VERY positive engagement and hard pull... But it makes you aware your riding a fast manly bike for sure

                    You could easily and cheaply extend your existing clutch lever without permanently affecting it. Currently the lever is one and one half inches from the shaft to the point of cable pull. There is room to extend the cable pull point about one inch. I drew a quick sketch for clarity. If it doesn't work you can just return the lever to its original state.

                    You’ll get a better mechanical advantage, but now the arm won’t rotate as far.

                    You’re practically guaranteed a dragging clutch.

                      the hand lever does have more travel more than is required by lower lever, maybe a smaller version of the mod. ?
