  • Speedometer lCDs going dark

I have noticed that the 'window' over the LCDs that show mileage, time, trip odometer, etc. is growing darker, to the point that the display is getting hard to read in daylight, Is there any fix for this?

On some models you can adjust the brightness of the leds.

If you have a factory dimmer, then more than likely you have LED meter lighting.
All others will be standard incandescent lamps. Diagrams show individual lamps on wire, but they are twist type lamps.
You can upgrade to LEDs, but you will have no dimmer control and may look like spot lights.

No, I'm talking about the glass, not the displays. The glass looks like its turning brown. This is on a 2007 RoadStar. I have also noticed it occurring on my 2015 XVS1300CT. The glass itself seems to be getting darker, much like Transitions treatment on eyeglasses, except they don't return to clear.

Judging by the crickets on this post, either no one else has noticed this problem, or nobody has any idea of how to correct it.

Did moisture get in there? eg: rust.

Not that I can tell....it is only the 'window' where the numbers for mileage and time is darkening. At present, I try to put a rag over the speedo, but they tend to blow off. (have to find a black plastic bag and somehow affix magnets in it, if I park my bike{s} outside.

I rebuilt mine cutting two piece of linear film laying one 90 degrees from the other one. Mine im sure was worse then yours.

How did you go about changing this Film Covering ? Please Explain the whole procedure ?

Where did you get the polarized linear film, and what was the price?

When cutting the film. Cut the two pieces out like my drawing below. If you cut two in the same direction you will get a black background with white numbers.

So just so I'm clear, you need two pieces? One on top of the other, but different cut angle. So just one piece won't work?

          • #10
I'm having a similar problem. Can hardly read the numbers on the odometer. The only way to see them, is park in the garage, close the door, turn the key in pitch darkness, then you can read them....

Heres a pic of my display. It turned really dark so time to replace the polarising film.

                  Hi there!
Its a real pain, but you can remove it by bending the tabs on the metalcage holding the lcd on the board, then very carefully bending the back and the speedometer board apart. The lcd come out with the metalcage at the top of the speedometer.

After that you replace the bad polarising film with new linear pol folie, im going to use 100x100x0,3 mm from Amazon.

SaxemaraBiker, Just saw your answer to my question. Thank You for getting back. I ordered a Polarized film from Amazon two weeks ago but it won't arrive until Nov.19th to Dec.11th. This sucks, as I have my speedo apart., really don't wanna wait that long. If not I'll buy another one, where I get it quicker. I broke down and bought a custom "Punisher" speedo face so I gotta remove the needles anyway in order to install. But brother, Thank You again for posting. Did you use two pieces of film as "Kmartcivic" stated previously, or did you use one?

Azuqui, unfortunatly my lcd had delaminated between the 2 glasspieces so the liquid crystal fluid was contaminated. As i already have a replacement panel i will use that instead. If i come across liquid crystal fluid for cheap ,ill put this one back together. Its working, but is very faint as it need more lq fluid. If you have to change film both in back of the lcd and the front, go with "kmartcivic,s suggestion, if you only have to change the front film, cut it in 45 degrees angle or check the best position for the film youre using by turning it so you have a clear screen!
The mileage is stored in the speedos board, so if you replace it ,it will show the mileage of the original bike!
                        Cheers

SaxemaraBiker, Oh wow! didn't know it was that bad. Okay then I change my front film which was burnt, but my screen looks to be okay, noticed how I said looks...lol anyway replaced the top film at 45 degree angle and now waiting for my new "White" LED lights to replace the dim bulbs I had. I get them tomorrow. I'll keep you posted when I put it all back together. Thanks again brother!, Carlos

Here is my new face plate. Painted the tips of the needles neon green to stand out more.
