  • Wildest (or most absurd) 'fix-its' you've seen on motorcycles

What is the wildest/dumbest/ most outrageous 'temporary' fixes you've seen on motorcycles, and being used? I'll start off with my favorite: I was returning from visiting the Barber Motorcycle Museum, and encountered rush hour traffic in Birmingham. Amidst the traffic, I spotted a dual purpose bike being ridden in the swarm. Apparently, the headlight was burnt out or non-functional, but the rider had a 'fix' for that.... he'd duct-taped a 2 "D" cell flashlight to the front fender!

That sounds like something they would do in Alabama!!

Speaking of Alabama, leaving an enduro race on the opposite side of Birmingham from Barbers Museum, I duct taped a off road riding boot in place of a leaf spring that broke on a home made motorcycle trailer with two dirt bikes on it.

Lots of wraps around and around the boot and axle until everything was snug.

Had to take the fender off on that side but the spacing was just about dead on and worked to get us home that evening. We made it 5 hours all the way home to Mobile Alabama and lived to tell the tale. Probably about 1981 or so.

I lost a clutch lever clevis pin and was able to whittle one from a small tree branch with my pocket knife. Repair held until my replacement one came from BMW. Some real McGuyver shit there.

Not on a motorcycle, but the stupidest and most dangerous fix I have ever done was when the fuel pump on my 1966 Chevy sport van went out on a Sunday on the Indian reservation in Northern Arizona. Obviously there was no fuel pump locally to be found. Mid-twenties and stupid, I just sat in the passenger seat, opened up the interior engine compartment lid and dripped gasoline down into the carburetor as my girlfriend drove us slowly about 40 miles to Flagstaff Arizona where I bought a new pump. If I dripped in too much it would flood, if I didn't give it enough it would quit. We filled canteens and water bottles full of gas so I had lots of it at my feet. With gas dripping down my elbows all it took was a single spark and we would have been history. Our noses were very irritated by the time we got to Flagstaff. I didn't realize how stupid that was until I was a few years older. That was pre-internet and cell phone so we didn't have a whole lot of options.

1966 Chevy van! Did you have a bed in the back and all? Classic shaggin' wagon there!

I never did put a bed in it because I was always hauling stuff. On that trip we had our two bikes and a bunch of camping equipment. But yes, a lot of shagging did go on!

Not a fix, but a McGyver. I needed to start a camp fire. I drained some fuel from the petcock of my old Virago 750 onto a piece of cloth. Then hooked a piece of wire to the battery to spark it.
