When adding a fishing leader to seat latch do you have to remove latch from frame?

  • #2
If you can access where the pictured red cable lug is then no, but I have never tried I just keep my cable lubed.

This picture was helpful to me cause my latch barely moves to release seat. Upon inspection without seat, the latch moves slightly to the left with key. I was messing with latch and pushed it all the way down and it clicked into lock position. Now key will not release latch. What do I do?

Thanks roadie. I knew I could count on you for an answer. One mor ?, do I have to remove existing cable? The original still works but would like to have standby option in case it ever doesn’t work.

      I don't see why not.

Leave the original cable and add the cheater as back up was what I did. Since I replaced my sticky latch I haven't had to use it.

I did it without removing from the frame, the 4th or 5th one I started removing it, or just lifting it slightly because my fingers are fat. I have always left the original cable attached but I just use my cheater wire to open.

Not trying to steal your thread, BC1955, but can you guys explain exactly how and where you add a cheater wire? With the seat off, I do not have a visual on the cable jug, but I do see about a half an inch of cable. Can't tell what direction the cable is sliding when activated by key (maybe that's my problem the cable isn't sliding). ????
The seat is getting harder and harder to release. Finally came off, now reluctant to reinstall it without addressing this issue. The cable pulsates a tiny bit when turning key but doesn't slide. After learning where and how to attach, which side of the bike do you pull from?
      Tia.

Look at the reply that roadiemort had. He had a photo of the latch showing where to attach pull cable and how to route it. That photo helped me more than anything. I also look at the latch diagram same as you would if you were ordering a new one from partszilla. Look in the seat section. If your sitting on seat the cable pulls to left. The cable you add should come out from under seat on left side. I put a plastic cable tie on my bike until I can get a fishing leader. It works great. I’ll go out and take picture and post to better show what I’m talking about.

The white loop is the cable tie.

Twowheel, you can remove the latch and unlock it by pushing the arm to the left. Remove two screws (10mm socket) and it come right out. Easy to put back. You can attach something to the arm and route it out to the left leaving it long enough to grab and pull. I left my cable hooked and added my new cable. Just run it under frame where seat goes and out to left side.

I tried for a couple years to get more info on how to add fishing leader and had no luck. If Roadie had not sent the photo of the latch I would still be looking.

Thank you for the help, BC1955. First off, I got the latch unlocked by sliding a flat head down to the cable and kinda pryed it up. In essence I guess I stretched the cable enough to unlock.
I saw roadiemorts photo, are you saying I attach cheater wire to cable lug? Cause that is what I don’t have access to plus Cable is still there. Earlier posts said you don’t need to remove cable to add cheater wire. So I’m still not clear.
Might really help to see a picture of where you attached it to, and did you remove your cable?

My cable is still attached. I just put a plastic tie wrap around the arm the lug is attached to. If you take the screws out and slide the latch out leaving the cable attached you can probably figure out where to put new pull string. I’ll take a picture of mine sometime tomorrow and post so you can see what I did. It’s temporary for now and I will redo mine when I get a steel fishing leader. I may not post pic til tomorrow night but I will get one.

Thanks to all for the discussion, pics, and Mort for the closeups. I've never had trouble with the release on my '01, but torquing on a thin key to release a latch seems less than ideal. I like the cable tie method as an easy backup plan.

I too have heard about this mod but never looked into doing it. With those pictures it looks like it would be fairly quick and easy. Great peace of mind.

Always good to have a back-up option to release the latch. I see in BC1955 pictures there is a bit of road grunge. My latch was problematic until removed and thoroughly cleaned and lubed. Works great now. Ace

I did the same with mine but I couldn't get it to work smoothly. It has something catching somewhere inside. I gave up and bought a new one. So happy because I fought it for years. I put a cheater on it for back up though.

Yes I think it needs a good cleaning. I plan to do that when I put permanent cable on.
