    What rear tire and pressure are you running and what front tire? Ever do double darkside? I wore out my brand new Shinko 777hd rear at 6k miles which isn't terrible but front still looks fine. As much weight as I have added to this pig I'm thinking of getting a car tire for rear. Removing my custom 18 in rims and going with stock cast 16 in wheels.

    There are a some sites out there to get more info The longest running one is a Delphi Forum as well as the Darksider tire page that was recently upgraded. Another is the Riding on the Darkside forum which is easier to navigate and much busier than the older Delphi forum. A moderator has to approve your registration, so it could take a day or two to get registered. There may be 18" tire options out there and that forum would be a great place to ask.

    Edit - Oops, that last forum appears to be dead - zero posts since 2018, still might find some info.

    As far as double darkside, I have a 19" HD wheel so I can't, but if I still had a 16" wheel I would likely put a rear MC tire on the front (reversed) just for the longer wear. Since your front tire is fine I'd just run it and change out just the rear if you can't get an 18" rear tire.

    My only mistake was not spending a little more for a run flat rear tire for a little stiffer sidewall. I have to run 46psi so it isn't squirrelly at speed. It took some time to get used to the quirks of the tire but now that I have a couple thousand miles on it, I'm pretty happy, It corners fine and I'm not afraid to throw it into the corners. There is a little flex that you can feel when you get on the throttle hard in the middle of the curve, but you may not have that problem.

    Do a google search on Darkside tire and you will find a lot of info in various riding forums.

      I have the Austone on the rear, but I don't think that's available any more. Front is a Pirelli MT66 reversed. I installed this set two years ago and they still look great. Not sure on the mileage. Maybe 10k+ ?


      Rear PSI is important for stability like Jaybo says. I typically run around 44psi on both.

      Do some research. You might be able to keep the 18" wheels.

      Only thing 18 in with any kind of sidewall is spare tire lol. I'm going to use fancy 18's on another build I'm doing and I have 16 in cast wheels coming. So a run flat for stiffer sidewall... Good to know.

      I may actually br cornering a bit better... Went in for vision check again... Left eye 20/400 (20/200 is legally blind) and right eye 20/60 that's with glasses... Cataract surgery scheduled in about 2 weeks. Might be able to actually see things now.

        I run a rear tire on the front. Same size as stock, but with rotation reversed. I get very good mileage front. I ran 3 Vredestein 175/75-16 on the back before the cost skyrocketed! I had no trouble with speed or cornering. In fact I would raise my foot from the foot board as as it scrapped and turned up. But I am currently running an mc on the back. So, for the front you could look at a rear tire. Flame on!!

        edit: I ride 2 up most of the time.

          Why run a rear MT up front reversed when using a CT on rear?

            That is what double darkside means. Rear tires, reversed will last even longer on on the front.

            I still get the increased mileage with no negative effects that I notice. And I like twisties. I may go back to a car tire on the back, but as usual, life has me busy on other issues. Hip replacement right now.

            And if you like the fat tire look, a rear on the front really fills out the fender.

            I know. But I seldom do Deal’s Gap. Here in Georgia I go up and down more than hard left and hard right. These bikes are not nimble. I would get a Gold Wing if I wanted a touring crotch rocket.

              Just adding my two cents here
              I've just installed this Nokian C-Line Cargo 185/75-16. It fits, but it's tight. No rubbing. I had to cut the left upper part of the plastic inner fender tought. I did not mount it on the rim but I mounted it on the bike. I'm at 40psi right now, I'll see how it goes down the line. Running 100Kph on the speedo I'm truly at 105KPH on my GPS. So mine is a 2005 and I'm running a 33 tooth front drive pulley (OEM is 32). I used to have the Austone, it lasted a little over 20,000 Km. Up front, I'm running the new Michelin Commader III Touring

                I think I will go with Michelin CIII Touring rear tire flipped for front and a car Dunlop snow tire 175 for rear.
