  • Road Trip Troubles

    Hey all,

Just made it to Denver. Stayed north of Durango at Lake Haviland and near crested butte at Lake Irwin. Gorgeous. I’ll share pictures later this week.

I made it to my cousins house in Denver. Went to the store after I got here (a mile away). On the way back from the store the bike started acting funny.

It seems to be idling lower than normal. If I pull the choke out it nearly dies. It wants to die in first and second but if I give it enough gas it’ll stay running, barely.

It also seems to want to die when I let out the clutch.

I adjusted The valves, replaced the intake manifold, and cleaned the carb about 1500 miles ago. Was running smooth as butter until this afternoon. Got about 45 mpg on the way up the mountain fully loaded with gear.

Ive done about 800 miles in the last few days. There was probably 30 miles of bumpy ass dirt//gravel roads. Cleaned the air filter right before I left. Coming back from the grocery store with a case of beer was the first issue I’ve had. On the bright side, the bike made it to my cousins garage and I have my full tool roll.

Maybe something in the fuel affecting the carb? Any seafoam around you can dump in and give it a go.

Isn’t Denver a mile high? The disadvantage of a carbonated bike. Adjust the idle to 900 rpm. Then sell it and buy a fuelie when you get back home.

Sounds like crappy gas to me.

That would be my guess also.

Seafoam and gas line antifreeze first

Check fuel filter, petcock screen filter, and carb inlet filter for debris and clean pilot jet

Where is the carb inlet filter?

Nah, It'd have to be running *really* really lean to begin with for that to be the problem. I'm at 7300ft - I'll run my '99 up the Sandia's to 12000+ ft and no problem. Gotta be a fuel or manifold issue me thinks..

I was on reserve when I left the store and it first started feeling wonky. Filled it up before I got to the house. I do have sea foam with me, but I use 4 oz every other tank. I try to keep it clean. I’ll check the fuel filter tomorrow but I looked at it like 2 months ago and it seemed okay. Gonna Pull the carb and put it back on. Hope it does the trick.

I feel like it’s a fuel issue. Could it be the pump? 60k miles on the clock.

Do the simplest first. Add seafoam first with gas lline freeze additive. Most likely water. The cv carb will compensate for the altitude that is why yamaha used this type of carburetor before going to fuel injection because of the emission crap. Turn the idle up a little too.

Turn the pump on and open the fuel bowl drain and catch what comes out in a jar. Even rap on the bowl with a screwdriver handle a couple of times during the process. Any water/foreign crap will come out first.

It'll give you an idea what the engine is trying to feed on.

My cousin has off today so I’m going to spend the day with him and not messing with the bike. I’ll dive in first thing tomorrow morning. I did get about 30 min of moderate rain right before I arrived. Could be a water thing. I welcome any ideas.

I've had bad gas/water I gas about 5 times across 7 bikes last 6 years. Always acts the same and a full bottle of gas dryer works well. Riding along all shitty and then wham its cured. Works great when that's the culprit. If that don't work can also pull tank and make sure coil wires are tight (had some vibrate loose before ran like shit) and might as well pull plugs to inspect).

Pulled the tank and carb this morning.

Lots of bumpy roads in CO for sure. What am I looking at on my coils? I do have my clymers with me too. I come prepared lol. Snagged some heet and carb cleaner today.

How long do I run the heet?

Maybe one other suggestion would be to check the enricher cover for a crack.

Pulled the petcock and cleaned the filter, cleaned the carb, cleaned the fuel filter. The petcock filter seemed fine. The fuel filter and carb itself were a bit dirty but nothing crazy. Coils are properly plugged in.

cleaned the petcock with soap and water. Letting dry and reinstalling on the bike later today. Will run heet and sea foam and update.

The idle on every bike I have owned will go down at high altitude. On the road star I just reach down and readjust it back to 900 and it may cure your problem...

She lives. Adjusted the idle up along with cleaning the entire fuel system lol. Not sure which did the trick but we seem to be good for now. Gonna do some riding around Denver the next few days before I head off through Wyoming and into Montana.

                        Thanks for all the ideas!

What do you use to clean the inside of the tank?
