  • Valve stem grommet failure

Riding yesterday and my rear tire suddenly deflated. Luckily I was on a piece of straight pavement with a shallow/soft ditch to my right because control was nearly impossible at about 100 KPH (62 MPH).
I herded the bike into the ditch at probably 50 KPH, but the ride wasn't over until I crossed over an approach to a field. On the far side, the bike nosed in and I high sided into the aforementioned soft ditch.
Minor damage to the bike (busted right passing light, cracked plastic saddle-bag, scraped fairing ) and minor damage to me (wrenched neck, split lip, broken bones in rt foot)
I changed the tires myself last time on the bike, and it didn't occur to me to properly check the rubber grommets in which the valve stems are set. The bike is an 04, so maybe they're original, I don't know.
Back in my garage today, I tried to inflate the tire of find out where the hole was, and as soon as the pressure began building I could hear the leak, and it was right around the circumference of the valve stem.
I got no prior warning that the grommet was failing as I checked the tire pressure yesterday (it was down a couple of pounds so I topped it up, not too concerned as I hadn't ridden for a couple of weeks.)
Anyway, just one more thing to be aware of.

I always change out tubes on spoke and valve stems on cast wheels each and every tire change.

If you are talking about the metal type with a rubber grommet washer and nut on both sides, then be sure to not tighten them too tight which will eventually crack the rubber. On my last tire change, I switched to mags after having that type of failure and also realizing a tubed tire failure on the road would leave me stranded. I now run tubeless and carry a patch kit which saved a fellow rider on a group ride last month.

When the tire lost air did the tire sidewall collapse or roll off the rim making you lose control of the bike? If so what brand tire is it?

Hey you can fix the saddle bag use a Dremel to make a v channel and use loctite epoxy for ABS plastic. Smooth it with a rubber glove to finger dipped 90% isopropyl or equivalent to smooth it out to reduce sanding since epoxy has a linear cure rate start smoothing at after gels keep your finger wet I usually fix it on the inside and the outside. Those are bags are hard to come by oh, I even bought one cracked on eBay knowing that I could fix it

What I call the grommet is the rubber piece attached to the valve stem. I didn't know what else to call it. I have the type pictured without the nuts to tighten it in place. When the tire went flat it flopped around but it didn't come off the rim and didn't even break the bead. The tires are Shinko white walls and I like them. I've used them for a few years and find them sticky and predictable. I'll get new valves put in this time (I'm having a friend do the change over in his shop) and I'll be keeping a close eye on them. I don't know how many tire changes are in my future as I'm 76 years old and eventually I'll have to stop riding. Maybe when I turn 80. Or not.
For now I'm off riding until my foot heals and I repair the bike, put on new tires etc. I'm hoping for a nice weather September for riding.
Thanks for the abs advice brianmac.

The Shinko's have a weak sidewall. A good tire with a stiffer sidewall would not have flopped around like the Shinko did.

I had one set of those shinkos I wore out , just looking at that tire the sidewalls looked okay to me. I did notice though the color of the rubber quickly turns Gray and the White Walls turn yellow and crack. Good wet weather tire that's about it. I bought them on my first came back out on the market it was a hundred fifty bucks for two tires shipt or thereabouts I wouldn't waste my money now

There not as stiff as a Dunlop Cruisemax. I know that for a fact. I can't say what other brand have a sidewall as heavy as the cruisemax because that is all I will run as long as they make them. I also know that there have been quite a few with a sidewall wobble from the Shinko's that goes away as soon as the Shinko is removed.

I'm not sure how it would react but if you as a Darksider you would have to get the secret answer thru a PM. Or they would say that the car tire will never get a flat because they are majic tires that solve all issues. lol

Or if you are a darksider you get a run flat car tire

My tires are 777HD Shinkos. Something has occurred to me about the rear valve stem/grommet that let go. I have a 90 degree elbow valve stem added to the one that comes out of the wheel, and I'm wondering whether with centrifugal force acting on that light item making it "feel" heavier to the stem in the wheel, it contributed to the wheel valve stem failing. Anyway, I'll be getting new tires and stems soon, and I'll get rim mounted 90 degree stems. It's awkward checking the rear tire pressure with the "add on" 90 degree as it takes two hands, one to support the stem and the second the pressure tester. Flexing the stem every time I checked the tires (nearly every time I rode) probably didn't help things either.
