  • Roadstar year differences: crash course in Roadstars

    Considering purchase of a 2012 or 2014 RS Silverado. Coming off a Vstar 1300. Vstars didnt change much over the years, and big differences between a 2012 and 2014? Known issues, opinions, or just buy one? ;^)

    From Richardson, TX. There is little difference between the two year models you are referencing. Both are fuel injected. Since mine is a 2007, that's as much as I know about them. BTW, I bought a 2013 XVS 1300CT a few years back so that I have something to ride around town and when my R* is down for repairs/modification. Quite a difference in riding position and performance. Since I finally have the majority of the little niggling issues with my R* finally worked out, I'll be putting even more miles on it (when bought in July 2013, it had @ 6500 miles on it.... now, it has nearly 56,000, and has many more to go.These things are darned near bulletproof!)

      Here's some rough history. Others can chime in as I know I missed some stuff.

      1999 to 2003 are 1600cc carbed models that had a tranny recall.

      2004 to 2007 are 1700cc carbed models with upgraded oil pump gear, keyway added to crank to fix dreaded starter spin, upgraded front calipers, revised ECM to allow for higher rev limit, and from 2005 to present - a higher output stator and regulator.

      2008 to 2014 are 1700cc Fuel Injected models. I don't believe there were any other changes through these years except for paint colors.

      Also, Just buy one.

        Unfortunately 2004 still had the weak charging system, that got changed for the 2005 year.

          I thought it was the 2004. So I have been avoiding buying a 2004 for no reason?

        Not the same as the starter spin on the 1600's. Once the starter spins on a 1600, your starter will spin but the engine will not spin. The rotor has to be pulled, the crankshaft and the tapered hole in the rotor have to be sanded then red loctite has to be applied to both and the rotor nut and a good torque to repair the spin problem.

            Thanks folks. I went with the 2012 because it came with a ton of add-ons. Picking it up tomorrow. Slightly cautious going from 1300 to 1600, well more excited really. Will report back, but keep the facts and experiences coming. Have to learn a brand new bike (half the fun).

            I'm even more confused, mines a 2007 - 1600 and no that is not a mistake or error. A Carburated XV1600. We never saw the Roady 1700. Only a few Warriors.

              That cause New Zealanders are special like the Aussies, the Japs new you couldn't handle the extra ponies lol.

            One thing you will notice in going from a 1300 to a R*... you tend to sit IN the bike instead of ON the bike. Another thing... you are going from a OHC engine to a pushrod twin, which means a lower max RPM, slower accelleration, and a heavier bike (it will take some getting used to!)

              You ought to be ok- still a cruiser. Just a little different feel. I'm lovin mine; I came from CBR900RR and Ducati 748. THAT was an adjustment.

                She is home. Got a great deal on the bike with 8000 miles. And a ton of extra accessories: original exhaust and Cobra long shots, OEM plus tall windshield (taller one installed aftermarket), handle bar risers, mustang seat, engine guard, highway pegs, external helmet lock, K&N air filter, lower wind deflectors, brake away cruise control, chrome fender tips front and rear fenders, Garmin Zumo GPS, new battery, hard saddle bags, rear luggage rack, large kuryakyn rear storage bag, windshield mounted bag, battery tender, cramp master throttle assist, kuryakyn handle bar iso grips.

                Probably selling the Cobras and the Zumo.

                Question: I have never seen the open air K&N filter. Not sure I like the air sucking sound it makes. Some probably love it. Will try it for a while but not sure.

                And BTW, is the best deal in the entire world $15 for a the U-Haul 4x9 motorcycle trailer with built in front wheel chock?

                  Crongrats on a beautiful bike! You won’t regret the choice. I had basically that same trunk bag on mine originally and I finally went to a hard trunk and like it so much better.

                  Oh and btw from the Oregon Coast. There is a wealth of knowledge here and everyone is always willing to help.

                        That filter is a good bit smaller than the Barons on mine.
                        I don’t mind the intake sound at all- ones pipes are on it I don’t think I’ll even notice.

                            If I decide to remove the KN, what parts would I need to go back to stock? For the average KN upgrade like this is it plug and play or are there dyno changes made as well typically?
